that spring is to help the rubber hose keep its shape and not get crushed.. u dont need it if ur changing to pipe..

a 2.5 inch cone filter will mount to the maf sensor

I thought the spring loaded cone was the MAF which lets the car know how much air is being drawn in, if you turn the car on and push it in it'll stall.....

Yes that plastic pipe sensor with a cone inside, is the air flow meter, and is the primary load sensing device on these cars, so no you cannot remove it...

^ I dunno try searching. Any breather filter from a parts store will work for the air pump. I took off my intake pipe today and noticed I couldn't push the spring loaded cone thing in the MAF in at all. Am I supposed to be able to? I could've sworn that thing moved before...

No the MAF's aren't compatible between S4 and S5s (https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...&highlight=MAF)

An air filter upgrade for these cars is supposed to be less than 1hp of a gain. Most people get an open element air filter just to clean up the engine bay and remove the factory air box that takes a lot of room, so its all up to you.

Go for it. Remember to buy a breather filter for the air pump.

Yes it no longer has the filtering from the airbox filter so it needs its own.

If you mean the air pump then you don't want to get rid of it because it activates the 5th and 6th ports. If you make your own switch to activate teh ports you can get rid of it.

to steer you in the right direction:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/univ2.aspx?ID=S0013
then select:
flange inside diameter
then select:
64mm [for the s5 turbo MAF, i'm not sure about N/A S5]
then submit.

I'm using the RC9700, which looks kind of small to me, but works fine, and is offset to help with spacing. I'm sure there are better choices.

Use the search option at above site to locate a small one to go over the input hose of the air pump.
