bigger/better designed wastegates on the s5. they are swappable s4 to s5 and s5 to s4, but you must use both turbo and manifold from the same series.

S4 turbos had a twin scroll system whereas the S5 did not, unless you switched the rats nest, ECU, wiring harness, manifolds and just about everything on the engine there is small differences that would cause problems.

the S4 turbo can be modified to act just like an S5 turbo though and i don't see why it wouldn't bolt up to an S5 engine. i do modifications to the S4 turbos with porting and twin scroll removal but have yet to try and see if it would work with an S5 engine.

well my s5 wastegate is all messed up and my manifold is cracked out... i have all of the emissions removed from my s5 and i was given 2 s4 turbos and manifolds. so i had planned to install one of the s4 turbos and manifolds to fix my problems. i am also hoping by puting this on i might be able to hold my boost above 500rpms.. with my current messed up wastegate ill loose like 5-7psi from 5500 to 7200.. im hoping it will fix it a little better.. are there any pages on how to get rid of the wastefate looking thing on the manifold?? thnx

If you just ditch the twin scroll on an s4 manifold/turbo wouldn't there be no problem running it on an s5 motor?

not difficult so no one has written one.

cut the flapper arm off the manifold and weld a bolt in it's place, preferably a hardened steel bolt.

one HUGE advantage of the S4 besides the obvious Turbo/HP = Henrik

Both have different boost "characteristics". I personally like the way an S4 turbo setup feels.

bump- still waiting on pics

i have a JDM fc3 turbo with a 1986 chassis but the owner said the engine installed in it is from a 1989. i.e an more desirable s5 with more power vs the s4 originally in the car. this was a selling point of the car.

since basically this guy i bought the car from has turned out to be full of crap about a lot of things i am wondering how to confirm the type of engine via looking at it as installed in a working car. for example he said it was a 1987 but a vin lookup (after i bought it already, sigh) says its an early 86. thats the least of it.

the car did come with another non running motor (allegedly the original one) so i do have reason to beleive the motor has been replaced.. but i'm wondering how i can tell what year the engine is that is in the car, preferrably without having to remove it or jack the car up or anything. you know, just looking at it with the hood open, like a car shopper.

if it helps any this is a picture of my car. i can take one from a different angle if it helps.. also my car is right hand drive so a few things arent where youd expect

thanks in advance.

s4 vs s5 visual differences- obvious

so i found the info after a few hours of googling around. and it looks like i have an s4. if a brick gets thrown through a certain persons window i have no idea about it.

the intercooler and alternator both look quite different, the intercooler has a flare where the tube coming off the side meets the body on the s5 and the alternator does not have the swiss cheese holes on the front.

also the text on the intercooler itself is different, the s5 says blabla turbo II, the s4 looks like mine.

so unless for some reason he just didnt swap the accessories and intercooler, which seems unlikely, i got slightly more ripped off than i was already aware of..

hope the info helps anyone else..

You should use the turbo that is in the best shape. Meaning you can still use your s5 turbo just combine it with the s4 hotside and manifold.

The only incompatibility between the turbo systems with the S4 and S5 (that I know of, and they aren't terribly complex) is that the S5 wouldn't know what to do with the electric switch for the twin scroll solenoid of the S4 turbo setup. Even then, some people say just to hook the twin scroll solenoid vac line after the TB and get rid of the switch. However, I personally see no good reason to do that if you can use the original switch as intended. I have solid reasons for that but I don't want to get into it if no one cares or if you can already figure it out.

To me it looks like you have a S4 JDM motor for a few reasons.

1. The JDM TII intercoolers say "Rotary Turbo With Intercooler" all of the american models say TII.

2. Your MAF sensor looks like it's an S4.

3. The neck for the antifreeze hose is from a S4 because it is aluminum. The S5's are plastic.

There are many other differences, but these are just a few.

That is an S4 but if was an S5 motor in an 86 the wiring under the dash would be a nightmare. Dont ask how I know.
