Take a look at your wastegate actuator then..

If the actuator bar is straight, it's a series 4 .. if the actuator bar has a bend in it, it's a series 5

Sheesh.. silly me.. I guess I just don't know what I'm talking about then...

Compressor housings between the s4 and s5 turbos are the same..

The s5 turbo when it was installed in an s5 car had an extra solenoid to control boost.. the s4 does not have this.. so even in you had an s5 turbo in your damn car you wouldn't be able to tell from the wastegate line..

the s4 turbo would have 4 acutators on it.. one for the wastegate (which as mentioned before, has a straight bar) and the Twin scroll actuator..
The S5 turbo does not have the twin scroll actuator below it...

But wait.. oh yeah.. I forgot.. I don't know what I'm talking about.. sheesh

Gee, Chris Ng knows his stuff - it was your question that is vague.

You're talking exterior body?
All Zenki model have a black rubber "rub strip" in the middle all the way around the car.&nbsp The Kouki model were all color keyed, and that strip is a little wider.

The mirrors are different.

The front bumper is different; the rear bumper is different.

The Kouki model had side skirts that give it slightly different shape.

1987 turbo has "10-fin" rims - 1988 turbo has 7-fin rims - the Kouki turbos (as well as the GTUs) had 16"x7" mesh rims.

Chris Ng can be quite harsh for some reason, but he does know about these things... but why aren't you listening???
What else do you want to know?!?! It looks to me like your question has been answered- it's not like it has S4 or S5 stamped into the housing!!

I'm not saying anything else. I've resolved to keep my opinions to myself.

Excuse me?
You ask for the diffrence betwwen turbos, and I explain an easy way of identifying them...
You come back and say it's installed in the car.. so I give you another method of identifying it while it's installed.. easy enough for a trained monkey to figure it out...
You still couldn't figure out how to identify it .. so I give you yet another method....
and now I'm a dick?

It's no wonder nobody else has bothered trying to reply to your question.. *******

Smirk.. I think it's just that I'm turning into an old crusty man But really.. I'm not all that hostile.. I know we've had our diffrences in the past Bam, but at least to me, it's kept things intresting for me on the fourms..

As for this situation, I don't belive I started off being harsh at all..

shrug.

When upgrading from an S4 turbo to an S5 turbo on my 87 TII, do any other changes, aside from the manifold, need to be made?? I'm going to be breaking my engine in for 1500 miles and don't intend to boost during that period and before I do give her some gas I intend to have a boost controller on there.. anything else??

Thanks

Aaron

Naw, it's just that some people need very little provocation before they get all offensive. (read above!) Some people are easier to rub the wrong way than others, like this yahoo, and if you are a little harsh or blunt, some people will fly off at that, and start getting personal!

Anyways- like I said- you know your stuff, it just may not come out sugarcoated!

Hey... I though I just said I was keeping my opinions to myself a few posts ago.... damn procrastination!
Cheers.

With a reply like this, you're lucky not to get a warning. You got all the info you needed (politely), then fired this back. If you needed an answer quicky you should have said so. Your question was also missing the fact that the turbo was on the car. We're not mind readers, and no one likes being insulted for trying to help. Try keeping it civil, or nobody's going to bother answering you.

Simple.

If im right...

Look where the manifold meets the turbo.

If its a S4, it will be close to 45 degree angle.
If its a S5, it will almost verticle.

The easiest way to tell is to look for (the absence of) the twin-scoll actuator.&nbsp This actuator is pretty big - almost the size of a soda can in front and slightly lower than the turbo (compressor) itself.&nbsp The Kouki does not have the twin-scroll on it.&nbsp Chris Ng also pointed out the fact that the Kouki turbo actuator is BENT, versus the Zenki turbo.
