TX s4 or s5 turbo swap in 1988 gxl?

hey guys, i just had a quick question for everyone because im getting conflicting information on this and im ready to buy my t2 motor for my swap. i have a 1988 gxl n/a a/t.

from my research, i have found you can buy the s5 and put it into a s4 body, with only slight mods, but now, i was just told that it uses a completely different wireing harness, and i can only swap in a s4 tll.

please help in anyway, thanks

The s5 will need a s5 engine harness. You can run a standalone but you would still need the s5 harness. I was thinking of putting the t2 s5 swap in my 87. If you can get dash harness, well the complete harness(s) from an s5 you should be good.

You need...
S4 turbo flow meter
S4 turbo map
S4 turbo front cover with oil pump or just run premix
If yours is setup 2 run low imp. injectors by pass the resistor box and run the stock s5 injectors
knock control box
S4 turbo ecu
If running the turbo s5 injectors you need to swap the s5 plugs in the s4 harness
Also need to swap the correct plug for the water temp guage
and of course use the stock harness and done.

It can be done that way but is way 2 much work,is not simply plug and play and if you dont have the basic wiring skills you can end up with a car that wont run and it will end up in another part out thread or scrapyard and i dont want that 2 happen

The question is do you have the budget 2 do legit turbo swap?
A turbo swap is not just buying a motor and dropping it in............there
is al ot more...............a lot.

i have a big budget if nessissary, but your right i can buy the motor and tranny anywhere for cheap... but the little things, i got a buddy who runs a warehouse full of rotarys and parts for any year, boosted or not, for damn cheap. so all the little stuff, i can get from him. is there a list of parts needed somewhere. ive reasearched the swap for months but looked elsewhere for a while(interior, wheels, exterior, ect..) untill i could get the cash saved to do it. the motor runs fine, its just the tranny is now giving out... might as well do it now i figured. plus 2500 limit ceadit card comes in handy lol..

If budget and parts aviability is not a issue get any series motor and run a standalone! On top of that you need turbo rear end driveshaft and tranny!

yes you can run the s4 peripherals on the s5 block but then you will not only need the s5 engine but almost everything that runs it from an S4 engine bay. easier to just swap in a series 4 engine.

the S5 is a better engine however, if you are willing to buy all the additional necessary parts to make it work. the series 5 turbo is one thing i would retain from the S5 block.

Divided short runner manifold, divided turbo hot side and a better wastegate desing!
And yes you can swap them between series as long as you keep the turbo and manifold together.

s5 turbo flows better than the s4 does.

the turbine housing and manifold are where the differences are, the s5 turbo is more suited to the high compression engine. on an s4 the difference between it and the s4 turbo would almost be unnoticable aside from boost creep is easier to manage with the s5 turbo.
