s4 and s5 shifter rod

I have look in the search option for a answer on if there is a difference between the s4 and s5 shifter rod and could find a for sure answer.

Now I know from checking on mazda trix that the shifter **** thread pattern is different and the shifter bushing looked different and I think that the shifter rod looks longer.

Is it possible to swap a s5 shifter into a s4 tranny?

If so what's need to do this?

s4 is like the s2 shifter,, in which there is a relatively large gap between the pivot ball and the nylon shifter cup
as noted above,, the thread on top is different for the shifter **** too

the s5 has a VERY short distance between pivot and cup ball ,, and ball it is, totally lacking the nylon cup and is larger in size

the s5 remote shifter kit in fact raises the pivot base higher
and gives you a hybrid shifter with the s5 like large metal cup ball, but the distance between cup and pivot ball is that the original s4 used

externally both remote shifter assemblies come up in the same hole,, there is no position change

Hey I have a question as well.

Attached are pictures of my shifter and my tranny, according to the post above I assume that my shifter is s5?? Can you tell from that picture if my tranny is S5 also?

I am having a hard time when I try to shift into any gear, the shifter feels loose and needs to be pushed hard in order to get it into a gear.

This engine is not in a Rx7, its swapped to my toyota so I don't know exactly what series it is.

yes that is a s5 shifter
-- cant vouch for the rest of the box as i cant see the gearbox mount ( V shaped rubber mount = s5 )

the issue may lie in that the box may have a shortened shifter extension housing
- usually 103 mm is cut shut out of the selection rod and the shifter comes forwards to a position nearly where many of the earlier mazda boxes did

in doing so,, dowel locating pins have been deleted,, and the whole extension is only held with 2 and not 4 bolts

if it was cut at 101 or 105 mm,, then getting some gears may be tricky
( the 103 mm relates directly to the position it will be in when the extension assembly is moved forward 1 set of mount holes )

alternately,, if the two bolts that hold it are loose,, it may in time wiggle backwards fractionally with use
-- and prevent reverse and some other gears
( loosen the bolts and shove the whole assembly forward that few mm and tighten )

also,, there is the possibility that someone is using a s5 stick in a s4 extension
( not so sure what would happen in this missmatch,, but methinks some gears would be hard to get if at all )

NB shifter housings can be swapped readily, its not unknown that someone would perhaps swap the rear extension shifter housing between s4 and s5

( i personally have seen imported boxes with the shifter housing damaged in the container, solved by adding that section from another dead box )

Hey bump you are right, this tranny was shortened and also the 2 bolts that hold it are loose

I believe that the shop that swapped the engine/tranny took the shifter extension out of another tranny and that might be the problem as you explain.

I think I will have to take down the whole tranny to inspect what is going on down there. I can shift all gears but it is just a pia to do it most of the time.

Thanks for your well detailed explanation

No. I put a S5 shifter in a S4 trans & never had a problem. I also swapped my Mazdatrix short shifter from the S5 trans to the S4 trans.

A lot of people put the S5 shift rods into their S4's to fit RX8 *****, too.

What will I be interchanging? Bushing or anything? Or is it a simple drop in.

(81-88=12x1.50, 89-95=10x1.25)

i believe the s5 shift ***** thread pitch is more common the the s4.
i might be wrong but ive hear of people using the 3rd gen ****, and rx8 ***** on the s5 rod.
i have a s4 and put a mazda trix short shifter with a s5 **** in with no problem.
