S4/S5 shifter preference

I have an S4 tranny in my S5 (auto>5spd) and my shifter is kind of sloppy and doesn't line up well...like a crooked HH. While my problem is most likely shifter bushings I've been told the S5 shifters feel more precise and less sloppy, is this true? I'm wondering if I should swap out the shifters when I do my bushings.

Thanks in advance

I may be wrong,But I think you should be Ok just swapping out.I "think" the only difference is the threaded part where the **** goes on..the s4 is Bigger compared to the S5..I have an S4 and Went to an Ebay Miata Shortthrow. It took a little screwing around to get it right but the shifting now feels better than the stock shifts. The Length of Throw is shorter.I did go back to stock and I my First shift was Like,WTF?..haha..I put the shortthrow back on!..In my Opinion If the shifters have the same Physical Characteristics, except for the Threads on top, shifting will remain the same...Oh,and if the shifter Feels loose..it is Most likely the bushings. When you finally get at the Three 10mm bolts and take the shifter out,you may not even see any there!..They have a Habit of Disintegrating, and That is what gives you sloppy shifting..Look at www.mazdtrix.com /shorthrow shifter install,if you would like a little info n whatyou are UP against..good luck to Ya KHAN..Mr Styx~

Thanks for the info, I think my friend just felt a difference because of the weighted S5 ****? I felt the shifter on his 90 GTU and it felt awesome.

the mazdatrix short throw is very nice, i installed it on my s4 5spd, it gives the shifter a nice firm feel and you can throw it into gear so quick its not even funny. my original shifter was probly the same one from the factory and the bushing thing that lines up with the tab that keeps it in line to shift into gear easy was gone, completely and gave me a very sloppy shifter feel, you may want to take a look at it on yours.

Haha man i did the exact same thing... I got a miata short throw but put the original back on because the short throw seemed way too tight, and i shifted a couple times and was like oh HELL no, so i put the short shifter back on and figured out how to fix it so it feels right.

The joint at the bottom the shifter is different between the s4 and s5 trans. I had a s4 shifter in a s5 trans before and that felt pretty loose. so i am not sure if the s5 shifter would even fit in the s4 slot. +1 on the mazdatrix short shifter
