the other differences are cosmetic. It's slightly boxier and there's like a plastic piece above the headlight display. (ya i have no idea how else to explain it). That's it I think...

It's the other way around over here. Most S4 surrounds are cracked in our junkyard.

No, they are not the same, even though they both serve the same purpose.

If you're going to be swapping the upper / vertical section, you need to get the bottom section that fits around the shifter housing.
They do not mix-n-match.

Then, on top of everything else, you need the shifter boot specific to each series.
The shifter boot does not mix-match either unless you're willing to punch new holes to line up all the little pins.
A lot of the shifter surrounds I've seen for sale do not some with the boot.

Well, I'm assuming we're talking about a manual trans here...

Wrong surround Ted. They're asking about the guage surround not the centre console surround. Although the first line of the post still stands correct IIRC.

Doh.
I read "switches" and automatically thought of my set-up.
Duh. :P

You're right.
The plastic surrounds are all identical.
They are all usually broken - the screw hole posts.
The switches are not swappable.
