Is this an s4 or s5 engine (pic) ?

well, was about to order a rebuild kit when I realized I had no idea if my engine was actually an s5 (previous owner is a lying bastard). I have this picture of it (at work now so cant check the actual engine), which I think shows a threaded hole for the knock sensor on the rear housing, which would make it an S5. i think. Does this mean for certain that its an S5, or am I just confused?

cars at home so i cant get any other pictures for a while, was hoping this pic would be enough to conclusivily say it was an s5. dont know if it was rebuilt or not, it came with the car (previous owner did a half-*** n/a -> TII conversion.) if the hole about the spark plug isnt for a knock sensor what is it?

I think most (if not all) engines had the thread for the knock sensor there, just might not have had the sensor installed? I dunno.

But yes it does look like either a J-spec or a remanufactured engine, it's got that heat tab on it to see if you ever cooked it, and if so, then they won't take it back.

i dont know what any other manifold looks like to compare. Is there a way to tell the type of omp with the front cover still on? off hand i just remember a small block with four oil lines coming off from it on the bottom left of the engine. two went to the lower manifold, and two into the top of the engine.

That's definitely an '89-91 engine - at least that rotor housing in the picture is. The knock sensor hole is on the rotor housings only on the '89-91 blocks; the '87-88 blocks have the knock sensor hole on the center iron, near the oil fill neck.

What year is Mine?

Hey Guys, I have the same question. This is a J-spec Motor. I was told it was a series 5 but don't know for sure. This first picture here shows the rotor housings. As you can see both housings have the threaded holes in them and both of the holes lead to dead ends so they can't be used for the knock sensor. I believe that the knock sensor is the small sensor you see to the right of the rear rotor housing that has the yellow wire attatched to it. I guess you could say it is in the rear side housing and not in the middle where the oil dip stick is.

What year is mine?

Here is a front shot of my motor. I do believe that it has the series 4 turbo and wastegate, but other parts of it look like series 5. Maybe in Japan they like to mix and match? I think the knock sensor should be the best indicator (I hope) as you will see, mine also has the manual oil metering pump found on the series 4. What I am concerned with though is what kind of internals does this puppy have?

Here is a picture of the turbo and oil metering pump. Like I said, I think these 2 items are series 4, but the position of the knock sensor makes me think that the rotors are series 5.......Somebody help me!!!!!!!!

Series 4 is the 87-88 13BT motor, and series 5 is the 89-91 13BT motor. Series 5 had a bit more power than Series 4.

The gold bracket looks like an engine stand adapter to hold a rotary engine. The disturbing thing is the anti-freeze in the spark plug holes.
