s4 na timing issues
ok i dont know if its me goimg crazy or if theres is somethung wrong with the timing on my seven.
ive posted before but i didnt get a clear straight to the point answer.
so heres what im dealing with, according to the fsm you need to place the yellow mark on the pulley on the pointer on the timing cover, make sure their alined. ok easy did that.
next there are two pionts on the cas that need to be aline as well, the little circle needs to be alined with the line on the base of the cas body, so aline the mark on the gear with the mark on the cas. easy no problem.
so now the pulley is aline right and the cas is set up or aline correct, so i go to put the cas into the timing cover making sure not to bump the gear out of alinement. no problem slips in perfect.
now heres where im either lossing my fricken mind or something is wrong with the motor, because once its all in place i would crank the motor by hand one or two complete turns while placing the pulley right back to the yellow mark alined with timing pionter on the timimg cover, then i would pull the cas back out and checked to see if the two points were alined up, but thier not.
is this normal for the two marks to come out of alinement after cranking the motor, even tho i aline the yellow mark on the pulley with the pointer?
it just doesnt seem right to me.

It's very easy to bump the CAS out of alignment when installing/removing.. Take the plate off the CAS and hold the gears in place while you install it. Then start the car and check it with a light. ^_^ [Or you could turn the engine back to the same point and look at the gears to see if they're still pointing right]
The CAS has a flat BLACK cover on it held with two screws.
This cover has a plug in it that can be removed.
When the yellow mark on the pulley is aligned with the front covers pointer and the black cover is screwed in the CAS.........you should be able to see one of the two *pointers* on the guts of the CAS thru said hole in the cover.
CAS rotor will turn on you as you install it. That's a hint. But the body of the CAS can be rotated so the pointer I mentiond can be viewed thru the hole in the cover. Make sense? Yes it does.
Anyway after installing CAS per manual.............check the timing using timing light with the enginE FULLY HOT/WARMED UP.

should the two marks on the cas still be lined up when i pull it out while having the yellow mark on the pulley alined with the timing cover after its been running or cranked over?
ive never checked. i know on a honda it takes 2 revolitions for the marks to line up. it depends if the teeth are exact with the e shaft. im sure a engine builder will chime in
Next time you have the marks on the CAS aligned................HOLD the rotor of the CAS so it cannot turn as you install the CAS.
Ah heck. Align the marks on the CAS as the manual tells you. NOW look at the top of the CAS and note where the two *pointers* on the rotor of the CAS are in relation to the fixed body of the CAS.
Now install the CAS. .........So now look at the rotor/pointers of the CAS and see if they are iin the same place vs the fixed body of the CAS. The same place you noted prior to installing the CAS.
IF not........then rotate the body of the CAS til the two pointers and again aligned as they were prior to stabbing the CAS.
Normally one of the pointers will be just pointing to the left reluctor on the fixed body of the CAS.
CAS have a tendency to rotate as you stab them into the engine. Spiral gears cause that. Normal.

Look at the CAS picture I attached. Your CAS should look like that after you install it. Turn the body of the CAS to make yours look like that. I mean turn the body AFTER you have installed the CAS and have the marks on the bottom of the CAS aligned prior to install.
Because of spiral cut gears on the mating gears the CAS has a tendency to turn a bit when you install it. Just rotate the CAS body once you install it to get back to where the marks on the CAS were aligned.
IF a CAS is aligned as in my picture........AND the front pulley has been positioned right, then that engine should start just fine. Use a timing light to get things spot on after the engine is HOT and running.

Got me. All I use is a timing gun with a inductor that clamps around one of the LEAD sparkplug wires.
I think the bullet connector is meant for a external tachometer though.
RPMs must be under approx 1100 rpm to check the timing and the engine must be hot/warmed up.
