S4 NA acting up

It seems as if my car has a mind of its own. Just recently it has been acting up when it wants. Sometimes it runs just fine but out of nowhere it will bog down and want to die, so i pull over and kinda just wait and see what its doin and give it gas tryin to get it to run normal again...ehh sometimes it works. When i got home i took the fuel pump out and the strainer was dirty and i thought maybe that was just the problem....so i cleaned that out and put it back in, started the car up and everything seemed fine. Took off and couple miles later same thing, car bogs down and wants to die...i let it idle for awhile and then its good again for about a mile then it does it again and just keeps doing that over and over. So im thinking it's time for a new header and cat. Last time i checked it i pulled on of the pre-cats off and it seemed pretty bad, ir was somewhat melted and maybe it just got finished off. Could this cause the car to do this? I kno when i downshift the echaust has some popping/misfire when it revs down. Ok so maybe the idle may be off and maybe even the timing. Does this problem sound familliar to anyone? Anything else i should check that may cause this kind of behavior. I really need my car, i dont feel right when my car isnt running good. please help - TK

check the timing and your tps i dont know if your cats can be apart of that problem but yet ive never had cats. but it mostly sounds like you got a vaccum leak somewhere or you got some really gunked up injectors.

i dont have a timing light guess it would be a good idea to invest in one eh? i need a fuel pressure gauge and a pressure gauge also... looks like i will be buying some stuff tomarrow. I dont hear any vacuum leaks but i will test them with a pressure gauge when i get one. this sucks, usually im good at spotting the problem. Anyone else have any other ideas of what it could be?
