are you swapping the internals only? or the whole rear diff.

I thought the auto, was different from the manual.

You're swapping the entire differential assembly, correct? If so, it can be done... with a minor amount of cursing.

If you're taking the internals from your 5 spd differential and going to put them in the case of your current AUTO differential (which serves really no point, at least in this situation...) that can also be done as well, probably with more cursing.

The latter is more difficult and requires that you set the backlash of your gears all over again.

The differential assembly as a whole (pumpkin) is a direct swap.

Same amount of work to get the diff in either way.

About the only thing in common between a tranny and dif swap is that you have to remove the driveshaft - 4 bolts.

ive never done it so i can only talk about what ive heard but if your changing out the hole drive train are you using a s4 drivetrain(tranny, chaft, diff) with the s5 motor? im sure it can be done but i remember reading about people saying to stay s4 s4, and s5 s5 just what ive heard...

Refer to my first post regarding your question.

Yes, it can be done, it is a direct swap.

Yeah, all FC diffs mount up the same, direct swap. May have an issue with the driveshaft tho...

Don't bother swapping the internals of the lsd diffs (from Turbo II's or GTUs's) into the crappy non-lsd (all na powered cars except the GTUs). It is just not worth it. You would still end up with the crappy diff housing and the weaker axles/halfshafts. Besides, I don't even know if it can be done anyways.

Source a whole lsd diff assembly plus the axles and it will simply bolt right up to your car.

You also mentioned converting from auto to 5-speed. There are several write-ups on that so do a search. I will tell you though that there are two different 5-speeds available. The weaker option from tne from na cars (excpet the GTUs) and the beefier 5-speed out of the TII's.

That said, each transmission requires a different driveshaft to mate to the correct differential.
A TII driveshaft will only fit between the lsd type diff and the TII 5-speed.
A na driveshaft will only fit between the non-lsd type diff and the na 5-speed, not sure if the auto requires a different driveshaft or not.

To mate an na 5-speed to an lsd (Turbo II) diff, you will need the driveshaft offered by Mazdatrix or go to a driveshaft shop and have one made. Another option is to buy my Mazdatrix driveshaft for this application. However, if you are going to go through all the work to do the swap, do it right and use all TII drivetrain parts
