S4 LIM - 2 Vac Hose Nipples... Clarification.

Have looked in the FSM and Haynes manual many times...

On the S4 LIM, which nipples are which? One should be the split air, and the other the port air correct?

The two in the direct middle...

IF you still have the rat's nest in place, IIRC the top metal line at the back of the engine goes to the fwd nipple, and the bottom metal line goes to the back...As far as which is the split air...???

Bumpity bump...

I've tried taking the ACV off... blowing through the nipples with a hose on it, and seeing which 2 holes air blows through (on the ACV) but it doesn't help knowing which is which.

No, no, no you poor Red Neck. Those are for the RELIEF and SWITCHING valves in the ACV.

Hers's how to tell which goes where. Remove the large discharge hose at the bottom of the ACV. Warm up the engine fully. Have both those small vac hose installed on one or the other nipple.

Now reach over and pull the BLUE plug off the Relief solenoid. Air should now blow out the exaust port where you pulled the large hose off. If it did not....then swap the two small vac hose above the acv. Then check again.

When you lose vacuum to the nipple that feeds the relief diaphram in the acv, the airpump air dumps overboard. That is the clue as to which hose goes where.

Comprede?

The Port air and the Split air are the two solenoids screwed into the acv. The Port air is disabled after 20,000 miles and the Split air is engaged ONLY when the car is in fifth gear. The are poppet valves electrically operated. No vacuum involved at all.

Port air sends airpump air to the exaust ports. Exaust ports being ....the exaust port right there where the gas leaves the engine housing. It is NOT sent to the catalytic converter on the whole. A marginal amount or air is sent to the split air pipe on acceleration and when in .........FIFTH gear. MOST airpump air is sent to the EXAUST PORTS when not being dumped overboard to the silencer in the right fender.

The air is sent to the EXAUST Ports to maintain a 14.7 afr to the catalytic converter. Catalytic converter works most efficiently when the afr is at 14.7, give or take.

The airpump air going to the exaust ports is one reason the afr reads very rich at idle if you remove the acv or disable the airpump. The RX-7 idles at a very rich mixture. It seems to idle good at 13 give or take a hair but even better at 12.5. A sputtering/missing idle might mean the mixture is too lean. That can be adjusted using the variable resistor on a series four. Not so on a series five. Buy a SAFC for enriching a series five at idle or trade it in on a series four...the good series.

Rear is relief, right HAILERS ?

HAILERS,
I have just noticed this on the "colorized" vacuum diagram that's been floating around ... Aren't the relief (yellow) and switching (orange) lines switched at the ACV ?? Looks like it or I have been drinking too much of that Guiness stuff.

That vacuum diagram can be seen below:

I got to read your responses a few more times to fully understand it...

This is why I'm confused.

My 89 GTU is kinda a hybrid.

Kevin L. has bitched at me on more than one occasion to get EVERYTHING back to S5, but I need this car to work before I can go buy more **** to fix my car. I need this car for a job to BUY all those parts to get it all back to S5.

Here's what I got.

88 Block/Rotors/LIM/ACV/Rat's nest.

Don't ask me why.... this is how it was when I bought it.

When I got it, it would not pass inspection (exaust) even trying to run with alcohol in the tank.

So I have a S4 rat's nest, but all the solenoids were for S5. Every other part of the intake is S5.

I hooked up the 5/6th ports directly to the airpump, and the VDI was spliced into the same line as the 5/6th ports but still controlled by the white solenoid.

I busted out the FSM and had everything hooked up as well as I could get, and FINALLY thought I had the whole thing figured out.

Everything is hooked up correctly except the two vacuum hoses that goes into the LIM.... I think

Hughes,
Thanks for the link to that colored diagram... been looking for it for a while. If only there was one for S5

Guys, I know running all this **** in different series is really fucked up, but I got to get it to pass inspection, so I can drive, to get this job I have lined up and waiting, to buy all the right ****! Crooked aint it?

I never thought I'd say this... but I'm damn near close to figuring all this out,

And I can't actually start the car.... still need to buy fuel injector o-rings

OH! Series five engine. Ewwwwwwweeee (humor).

It's a non turbo?? Say yes.

I described a series four. I don't own a series five. I'll have to look in a manual to see how close they are in this area.

One thing is a given if this is a non turbo. When pulling the BLUE plug off the solenoid on the left side of the engine, and the engine is at idle and fully warmed up.........air should pour out the large black hose at the bottom of the acv.

If air does not blow out in large quantities, then switch the two small vac hose on the top of the manifold and try again.

ON a series four these two metal nipples are about an inch or less apart. Off to work now.

Well... its a little both actually

88 shortblock
S4 LIM/ACV/6 port actuators
S5 "exten" manifold (VDI)
S5 dynamic chamber/tb/everything else.
S5 ECU etc etc etc.

But yes... all N/A stuff.

I don't have the FSM with me, and I'm on dialup... I'll post the last two things I don't know where to hook up as soon as I can download it (dialup )

Good to know that the port air is disabled after 20K miles though.

As far as the split air goes... I just noticed that the airpipe from the cat is missing No fawking wonder I failed emissions. I thought the airpipe on the cat was only for when the car is warming up, to help warm the cat up quicker.
