Angled brackets, flat brackets...pretty much the same thing, construction-wise.

How often have you jump started a car in the recent past?
Seems like you placed the battery in just about the worst possible place because it was slightly simpler to build the mount and easier to get to on the off chance it needed to be jumped- which, by the way, is also possible at the terminal in the engine bay where the new battery cable will tie into the rest of the system.

Next time you think long and hard about something, include the fact that you have access to more facilities than the average bear (welder, for instance), which frees you from the constraints of the normal shade tree modder and makes the difficult possible.
Ouch, a little harsh, don't you think?

I see where Nate is coming from, the intensity of "doing it right" (good fabrication, perfect measurements, for instance) while mounting the battery in the rear compartment is exponentially higher. The rear compartment area is not flat, and so building a piece to make complete contact or even just building a few extra brackets would have taken much longer; and as I understand it, that battery tray took almost all day anyway.

Although putting the battery that high and that far back in the car does not make sense from a center of gravity and mass centralization point of view, it does make sense for jumping the car, ease of removal, and ease of installation.

And a car with a haltech, big turbo, cold starts in the winter that doesn't get driven a lot will need jumped quite frequently. Throw in a fairly rich tune, moving in and out of the garage without allowing it to fully warm up, and the spark plugs will get fouled in a hurry.

I know my rx7 needs jumped from time to time.

Now why is it the worst possible place?? I thought it was a good spot. Are you thinking the lower the better?

If your going to slam my location then you should tell me where to put it, maby in the gas tank? How about on the roof?

Anyways it too late now, its welded up and bolted in. The battery weights like 35 lbs, will it make a noticable difference, probally not.

I am open for suggestions...

cheers

No, not really.

Sorry if you took offense, that was not my intention.

Doesn't the passenger bin make more sense...it's lower and more centrally located. Given that you were moving the battery from it's stock location, why not go for the gusto instead of the simplest solution.

From a performance standpoint no, that battery is a mere drop in the bucket.
So, carry on.

BTW...how do you install the rear carpet now?

Lots to show today.
Just about done Depowering my steering rack.
Took all the old fitting off the lines and welded them shut, should keep the dirt out.
Also fixed the gas tank I drilled thru a few days ago. Its a good feeling to have that mistake fixed abd behind me.
Stripped some of the undercoating

Welded a M6 fender washer

Then a short M6 bolt to plug it, dont ask why I did it this way, the washer and bolt were right in front of me at the time.

I broke the snap ring that holds this holder into the housing, could not find a listing from the mazda parts diagram, so time to get creative. Welding rod saved the day. Hold it with pliars and tap with a hammer, went all the way around no problem, cant move the holder anymore, hope I never have to mess with it in the future.

I am using/have experience with the painless wiring harness in a car I am doing a similar type restoration on (only difference is my shell is rhd)

I must say the painless kit is awesome and very easy to work with. Figure on at least 30-40 hours of time laying out and wiring up things. But when its done it is so much cleaner and so many less wires and you can put things how you would want them. The only difficulty I am having is with the factory headlight switch and figuring out how to wire that up into the system. It has taken me a lot of guessing and testing and I am awfully close but still not perfect. Then again I have little experience with relays coming into this wiring job.

Drop me a message if you want to know more and hopefully I can get some pics posted at some point.

ramello...Cool to see someone running a painless harness. For the time being I think I am going to leave mine alone. Driving is better than wrenching.

Anyways those fittings are off of the factory power steering lines. I just zipped the lines with a saw and slid the fittings off. Then clamped them in a vice and filled in the hold with the welder.
The banjo bolts were a little more complicated due to the length and irregular shape. I cut the heads off and slid in a M5 bolt, then welded around the hex head.

Sorta like this

You can see that M5 bolt just fits right inside of the hollow cavity of the banjo bolt, just weld around the head and screw it into the steering rack. Its to hard to find metric fluid fittings to bother with anything more elaborate.

cheers man!

I am extremely interested in this as I just fund out that my entire harness has been cut and butt spliced together. Rather than cut and solder every connection and still have **** wiring, it would be much better to do it all new.

Where in Albany are you? I would love to see your car some time. Shoot me a PM.

I found some pretty shitty stuff in my wiring yesterday. Some parts were cut, many wires just left hanging.

Thinking more about gutting it....I dont even want to go down that road...might have to.

The way I see it the wiring in these cars is the weakest link, companies like painless higher quality stuff then the Mazda stuff when it was new. Ive blown an engine because of crap wiring. Its really worth the effort and money.

So that autometer dash is because your gauges didn't work? The only thing affected by a haltech install *should* be the boost gauge. All the oil pressure, coolant temp, fuel sender, tach etc shouldn't be affected by installing any standalone. You've got a major wiring gremlin (ie. somebody cut a bunch of **** they shouldn't have) in that case.

Nice job so far though, good idea on the powder coat for the chassis pieces, good urethane paint will hold up well down there, but PC is extra insurance!

Keep it up.

Lots of progress to report
Oil Metering pump is in the trash can!!
Engine is installed
Trans is in, without the rear mount. I lost part of the trans mount, the V shaped part. Going to have to get a new one of those...

As uasual, pictures are worth a thousand words.
Getting rid of those electrical gremlins, all of them.

Onto the engine, I dont want to open up the engine, I dont think I could put it back together for one, and there is nothing really wrong with it. It leeks a little oil, so ill fix that, but nothing major.
Also getting rid of OMP, I will premix instead, just like a chainsaw...

Since I had to take the front cover off I had to re-install the crank angle sensor.
The FSM talked about a yellow or white mark on the main pulley. Mine has slight corrosion on it, but I am pretty sure this is what they are talking about. I also popped the cover off and took a pic of the teeth inside. If anyone has any inslight I would really appreciate it.

I also have a picture of the orientation of my main pulley, it only goes on one way as far as i know.

Also that stupid oil filler thing fell out over and over again, so a better solution had to be found in a hurry. A M20 jam nut and a bolt will do the trick. I wish I a better solution, but its quick and dirty. I put twi spot welds at the base of the tube to hold it.

Hopfully seth will chime in on this one. I tried to cut this with a jig saw out of .125 alum. Needless to say the edges suck. Were currently working on getting a few cut on a water jet machine.

Got a little done today. This thread defintally went beyond a engine bay paint job...
I managed to get the front bumper on today, it was hard on the side where the car got hit, I used no bondo, and did no paint work. I achieved my main goal here, and that was to allow the headlights to go down. I am digging the look of the car, its nice and plain, no big spoiler. Those ricer civics better watch out, I am going to dump my wastegate to atmoshpere and point it in their direction...
Anyways...engough B.S.

Also replaced some seals on the fuel injectors, not doing to much in this area as I still have to come up with a method to seal off the holes left by the oil injectors. Giving that I was making lots of stupid mistakes, today was clearly not the day to do this.

Thats about all for today...

cheers

rear suspension...

Been having lots of fun the last few nights. The rear suspension has put up one hell of a fight. The rear control arms were the worst, the pivot point bushings did not fit, they were way off. Some powder coat did get in the area where they slide in, but not enough to cause these kinds of problems. After several hours I made them fit. Everything else went fairly well, the rear knuckles were a bitch to put on, but would you expect anything more? Half shafts no problem, brake lines no problems.
Time for some pictures...Delrin subframe bushings anyone??

Cam adjusting bolts, straight from mazda. I looked at every hardware store in town and just could not find them. These babies are nice!!

Nasty old diff on there, makes it look like ****. Forgot to fill the diff with oil, it would have been alot easier to do it before installation.

Rear sway bar mounts...things coming together. You can see in the back ground that I flipped the crown things over that go under the two differential ears. I dont know if this is because of the mazda comp bushings, but where was a large gap between the top of the crown and the bushing, flipped it over and pow!! Very solid now, can even move the damn thing.

Stainless clutch line, nothing to cool here.

Still waiting on a trans mount part, then finish exhaust, headshields, and driveshaft. Then throw those wheels back on. Then the fun part...

just one question, open wastegate or recirculated, I cannot decide...

cheers

recirculate if you are driving it on the street, to loud otherwise. You end up looking like a huge douche opening the gate around town.

miles and miles of wires....

Been a few days since an update.
Started to run wires, they are everywhere. Most all the circuits are going to feed into a special spot behind the dash, where all the relays and fuse box will be. I am working from the outside in, mostly because I havent got any of my switches or fuse box yet!
Last night I went to work on the rear lighting system, running lights, brakes, turn signals, reverse lights.
I started by mounting my Haltech.

Which hole do I stick it thru????

Doing my part to help the enviroment, I recycled these wheels off of my DSM. Maby you saw my rant in the newbie section when I first joined RX7 club. Sorry no pic with the entire car, I'll get one tonight.

Made this neat patch harness, taking the 6 pin mazda connector that goes to the light assembly. 2 wires are grounded to the chassis, then the 4 critical ones go into a metripack 280 series connector.

Thanks Mazda for giving me this nice OEM clip for my harness.

Back of the Altornator, these two wires I believe are for the voltage regulator and charge warning light.

Switch panel, I had no better way of holing it to this trim piece. Hopfully it will hope up. If not the duck tape is coming out!
