S4 clutch type LSD, internal setup question

my driveline guy called me yesterday and has my S4 LSD apart. he notes that two clutches on each side of center may be in backwards and are not making contact w each other. his opinion would be to flip them so they would make full contact.

at least that's how i understand it over the phone.

i am going to buzz over to his shop so i can actually see what he is talking about. in the mean time does any of this make sense? i don't have a 2nd gen shop manual as i have an fd and would appreciate any input.

thanks

just returned from actually seeing the clutch.... way different than i described. things sometimes get lost on the telephone.

the internals were assembled in an order where the two discs w circumfrential lines were next to each other. they should be alternately spaced w the discs w radial lines according to my guy.

any feedback on this?

also the floater disc is dished and the discs are a bit worn so i am going to refresh it all.

jackchild59..........

THANK YOU. i really appreciate the link to the FC SM. it answered all my questions and will be a great help in reassembling the LSD. (it also negates just about everything in my previous posts)

******* sweet how the FSM helps people out. When I swapped internals of two rear ends for my FC it was like the Bible.

Glad everything worked out, Howard.

Any n00bs reading this, check the FSM's and Haynes first. This should be a perfect example of how helpful they are and can be. Peep the FAQ and archives up top.
