RX7 will not stay running
I just purchased a 1989 RX7 with a problem. I can't find anyone so far that will work on it. It starts and runs fine but when you drive it the engine will die out. It's a five speed if you leave it in gear while still moving ,turn the key off and then turn it back on again it will go again. The person i bought it from bought used coils that wasn't the problem. He check the fuel pump with a pressure guage it was working building pressure. He said it use to hardly ever do this (dieing out) now it does it all the time. All the Dealers around St.Louis are on strike. I checked on new coils $400 dollars. I hate to start replacing things that aren't the problem. I bought the car cheap but I hate to put more in it than it's worth. If anyone has any answers or suggestions please let me know.

Sounds like something is breaking down under voltage. Turning the key off and on removes the voltage, allowing it to recover for a little bit. Most likely suspect, the AFM. Second possibility, the fuel pump itself. Third suspect, the leading coil ignitor assembly. Problem is, you need to troubleshoot the failure before turning the key off and on, since it will then have gone away. Good luck!

If you do decide to go the swap the coils out route, please do your wallet a favor and go the junque yard route. Nothing is worth 400 bucks. They can be had for about 20 -30 bucks in wreck yard. Also do invest in a new about twenty buck fuel filter before anything. A pain to change out but what if its not flowing right? Really does sound like fuel starvation. Ever do this idling in the driveway? Could be it does not do to no real load. Might check the plug for the fuel pump on the aft side of the left rear strut tower in the car. Under the rug material. Might have to take that speaker guard off(plastic cover) to see it.

also invest in a digital multimeter. i got a cheap one that fits in my pocket from Radio Shack for $25. make sure it's not a grounding problem or loose/broken wire somewhere.

"hardly ever used to do it, now does it all the time" is a sure sign of something 'wearing'. Start with the basics, check/change the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, ignition cables and oil. Its always a good idea to give a new car a full tuneup when you get it as its rare that you know what the previous owner did to it.
