The bottom line is that the driver plays a big roll in the safety of a car. If you drive it like a retard - your gonna get burnt.
The other key is the condition of the car. Reading posts, many FC accidents are caused by mechanical oversights. Bald tires and mis-bled brakes to name a few
If you get T-boned by a Navigator at 90 mph, then no - it's not safe. But for most road accidents, the car fares very well.

I think over all it is safer. I drive an FC, probably one of the few with 4 wheel ABS. I am not worried about my driving, but other people on the road scare the crap outta me. My last car was totaled when a drunk driver in a big honkin red truck slammed me into a telephone pole, then took off. I think, if I had been driving my FC, I could have gotten away from him. Se la vie.

Just watch it when it's raining and youll be ok. Cars are built with crumple zones so when you crash the car crumples to absorb the impact. If the impact is greater than that, ya your gonna be better off in a hummer than a rx7. Your alot less likley to be in an accident in an rx7 anyway. 50/50 weight.

i hit a van front end bus thing head on, i was going 45 mph my way, and they were going 40 mph their way... car spun across the median, hit the bus head on, and ran the back end into a fence, and i came out with not even a bruise, so yes, they are safe as hell

i agree fc's handle and brake very well. i had gotton into a race with an accord, obviously i was leading the race, i admit i shouldnt have been racing, but im not going to step down to a honda. anyways we both started going i had at least 5 car lead all the sudden a van cuts both of us off, my car was able to stop, the accord crashed into the curb, oh yeah as well there was a jump right were we had slammed on the brakes i think thats why the accord flew right into the curb.
so i think fc are safe to an extent, but if a bus or trucks driving right into you and you cant avoid it, your probably dog meat.
my $0.02

i feel that the fc is safe in terms of the car itself. however the cars tremedous capability can motivate some to do realy stupid **** and get hurt regardless of how safe the car itself is
im glad my fc wasnt my first car. i had to learn the hardway how to be a better driver by wreking my crappy old civic a few times. now that car was dangerous. unpredictable at-limit handling, shity shity brakes, no power to accelerate away from truble. that car was a sitting duck, but then again i was dangereous thing in it. i guess its good i learned my lessons in a crappy old $1000 dollar pos that evn if i did get over my head in i still wouldnt be in that much truble.
it would have realy sucked if i wrcked my fc being as stupid as i was with that old honda. i probobly would have wrecked it even harder because its so much faster.
i feel realy safe in my fc. especialy on the highway. these cars have amazing high speed stability. even my dads old taurus that wieghs 1000lbs more and was set up for cushy cruising didnt feel as safe on the highway. the car feels so conected to the road you feel confident that there is an extra envelope of capability there if you need it. the brakes are awesome too. a while back i certainly would have totaled just about any other car except my fc when i had to suddenly stop for backed up traffic on I-4. i slammed on my brakes at 70mph, all four wheels locked up and i screeched to a stop in what couldnt have been much more than a hundred feet (good tires helped too). how many cars have that kind of braking power? ABS might have helped but there are times when a full lockup is the quickest way to stop and i think this was one of them.
anyways dont get an fc for your first car, you, but hopefully no one else will end up regretting it.
