Rx7 Turbo II (1987) Is it really worth it...

A guy around my area has a 1987 Turbo II RX7 For sale. It has 152 000 KM on it approx 56 xxx Miles. The car looks like it needs a nice paint job and some interrior work. Its the original mileage and has some work done such as new tires / and clutch. The question i have, do you guys think its worth getting a 87 Turbo II, its very old obviously and I dont know how reliable the cars are..

If i wanted to restore the car so it would be in great condition, can you list what parts I would replace / work to be done (such as paint job) and such. No engine replace / swap I rather just do a rebuild.

Thanks

56K miles is approx 90,160 KM. Is that the mileage on the engine and 152K KM on the car?

Oh, yeah, make sure you do a thorough inspection (ESPECIALLY a compression test) and if you don't know how to do a compression test on a rotary, get someone who knows how to do it for you.
if it's got low compression, or uneven compression, DON'T GET IT unless you plan on putting a motor in!

Supra is pretty much a luxury car, has i think 240hp, and its torquey, but it weighs alot.
Corrados are nice cars, and look great, but they're FWD
And I just don't like DSM's and won't even comment on them.
FC's (second gen 86-92 RX-7's) are great, but can have some fugly interior colors (i don't like the burgundy and think the blue is repulsive). The interiors are nice, besides the colors of some. The one you're looking at (Series 4 86-88, but turbo was only 87-88) has 182hp and 183lbs/torque or something around that. I love the looks of FC's, and they have great handling, and good engines, the turbo II engines will generally last about 120k-140k if taken care of (change oil on time, and the other fluids, and don't do any major modifications without some sort of equalizing modification). Rotaries don't like to run a very lean fuel mixture (too much air, not enough gas) so when letting it breath more (exhaust) you have to either add more fuel, or control the boost pressure somehow.
Thats a fair deal you're getting, it could be better, but hopefully the motor is in good condition (read: not on its last breath), also check for rust. Check out this website http://www.aaroncake.net/ for a buyers guide on second gen RX-7's
And if you can, get the compression checked on the car.

Im sorry I did the conversion of mileage wrong. The car has "152 000 KM on it) which is approx 90 xxx miles.

I really dont know if this will be the car I will purchase, but I have wanted a nice sports car for a while, and I need some help with what to get. I was thinking the Rx7 but what scared me is the age.. Should I be worried about the age ?? Or does age make her more sexy

Im not really looking for a super fast car, but I have my mind made on the Turbo II model. For the most part I would rather restore the body with an excellent paint job, restore the interrior with possibly reupholstering of the leather seats / carpet / top and interrior dash painting (maybe new gauges). But I really wanted to update all the little things, suspension / brakes / basic engine maintenance.

So hows it look guys, is the Rx7 the best one out of the few cars I listed to get? Be honest dont be a fan

Thanks

I like the Supra and the RX-7, if you could get a Targa top Supra for a decent price that'd be pretty sweet too. I like the TII better personally, but thats my opinion. Don't get a talon, there's better cars out there. Corrado's are pretty rare but they have alot of potential to become VERY fast cars. If you want a true "sports car" feel get a RX-7 or a Supra and update your suspension and then do some basic performance upgrades (exhuast, intake, fuel) and you'll be a happy camper

As far as the TII you found goes, get a compression test on it and go through it thouroughly, it sounds like a fair deal.

Here is the bottom line IMHO.
From what u have posted, I get the impression that you want a sporty car, in a certain price range, and keep it mostly stock (no serious performance upgrades) and nice.
For u...i suggest the supra. I had an 88 MKIII before my FC. I love both cars very much. The Supra is a pig (heavy). But it was a better daily driver than the FC. The engine is bulletproof and Its farily powerful (turbo).
The FC is a very nimble, quick, light and ROTARY. But it requires the owner to pay a lot of attention to it. Lots of maintanance, knowlegde, research and care.
Its all up to you...the supra u can drive it, park it and forget it. But the FC will bring you much more pleasure as an enthusaist.

i agree with sunshine the supra is a better car if you do not want to make the car a dragger or high powered. the rx7 although i have never owned a tII yet is a very maintenance oriented car it likes to be paid A LOT of attention to (just like a woman). the talon would be my 1st choice for someone who was thinking about small performance but does not want a lot of reliability or mantenance issues. they can be made very fast for very cheap, but if you are only going to go for cornering performance the AWD system will be your down fall. now if you want a quick 13 sec. car that will also handle rather well i'd say go with the talon. none if any mods to engine lots to suspention, supra. and lastly if you want a car that you can spend all your time and energy and money with and on and you realy realy love your cars go with the rx-7.

my 10 cents

I disagree, go with for the TII. 8 month ago I knew absolutely NOTHING about cars from a mechanical standpoint. Not that I'm a genious now, but I'm not afraid to give things a try. I also know of other stupid people who've owned them without much issue.

Mine was $4500 (CDN paseos) with a new (used) engine, and good paint. (not that it was 100% perfect)You should get yours cheaper if it needs paint work. Keep in mind that the engine tends to go @ 120k miles.

The one thing i do not like about the MkIII supras is the fact they look very very outdated, even with some modifications they still look some what .... Ugly, they however do have the best seats by far (in my opinion). The talon 1gs interrior is horrid thats the only thing that hurts me there. However they do have some serious power stock and with modifications jeez there fast (a friend owns a 2g with some nice mods). The Rx7 has allways attracted me because it looks like a real damn sports car.. Not to mention its the only car with "2 seaters" which I want.

They look the best by far with a simple set of rims / paint job and lowering (by far).

I have come to conclusion that I will go for an rx7, sure i might get myself into a lot of trouble, and pay a lot of money but 1. Its different 2. Its sexy 3. My wife will never drive it

Thanks for the info amigos, add me to the rx7 owner list in a months time

If your going to get a Corrado, get the VR6 because the G60 is a crappy engine. My friend has one and the supercharger isn't boosting at all and it is slow as ****. You'll already have enough problems trying to sort out all the electrical problems they have so you don't want to worry about the engine too. Get the TII.
