rx7 questions

ok I've been very interested in rx-7's and have been sniffing around lately to buy one...but in my findings I have come across many acronyms and other things I can't quite decipher so heres a starting list if someone can answer these or if theres a general info site somewhere I can be directed to that would be nice

S4/S5
FC
FD
some of the differences between GXL GTU etc...

anything else to this effect would also be helpful...thanks

This 86/87 brochure shows the differences bewteen the models of that period. This should be a good start for you. Note that there is a good buyer's guide elsewhere on that site.

S4= Series 4 i.e. 86-88 year model
S5= Series 5 i.e. 89-91 year model

FC is a Second Generation RX-7 86-91(2) Not many 92's but they do exist, only model i have heard of is a 92 Tubo II...left over from 91...just somehow mae the 92 year date instead of 91...main difference is the V I N that is about it.

FD is third Generation RX-7 93-95

GXL is mainly the upscale RX-7 most o these came loaded...i am sure you could leave off some stuff but for the most part decked out. the GTU and GTUsget me confused so i am leaving the alone. Then there is the convertable....bout same a GXL only convertable. Then there is the TII loaded..and with a turbo

well enough babbling..later

LOL, they confuse just about everybody. I'll explain, because I don't think that those web sites will. Basically, the GTU name came from one of the racing classes in which the RX-7 performed well, Grand Touring Under, aka GTU. The "Under" = under x.x liters, which changed year to year, but basically means the smaller engines without turbos vs. the GTO where O = Over, aka larger engines or turbocharged engines. This is why Mazda used it to describe their "high-performance non-turbo" model. Here's the lineage:
86-87 Sport (stripped-down, high-performance non-turbo model)
88 GTU name replaces Sport name (same concept though)
89-90 GTU is now the name of the base model, and the stripped-down high-performance non-turbo model is now called the GTUs. Yes, it's a small "s". No, I don't know why.
91-92 No more cool non-turbo high-performance models. Just the base model, TurboII, and convertible.
