If you're looking to do some sort of custom setup companies like Magnaflow, Edelbrock and Flowmaster have a wide array of different size/configuration mufflers that you can use.

Are you having them put on by a muffler shop??? I got my cans from ebay and had minake put them on and they just welded in a piece of tubing that extended the pipe. They did a damn good job too. I think here they charged me about 110 to put both mufflers on and to take out my old pre silencer and put a new one in.

Sorry to hijack the thread but from what I've learned about smaller displacement engines, it's not a good idea to remove the cat for the simple fact you'll lose some torque and also it makes the car sound really raspy. Also, dual mufflers is a waste of money because you could just put the muffler in-line on your exhaust and have tips coming out the back instead and it would have the same performance, just maybe a little quieter. Also, resonators are put there to cut out the raspyness of your engine. From what I can tell, these cars sound raspy as hell when you start removing parts from the exhaust.

well some people like the raspy sound. Also smaller displacement engines may like a more restricted exhaust but the rotary engine loves to breath! So the more free you can make the exhaust and intake the better!

And we like to free up the exhaust for peformance.... The sound is just a plus or minus that we get with it

Though I like our sound... It's quite nice.

edit: Though there is some guy at my college who thinks the 'brap brap brap' is retarded in them.... blah to him.

Rotary displacement is not the same as piston displacement, learn that now. For example, people sizing turbos are not going to be looking for one that is made for a 1.3L, they will be looking for ones in the range of 2.6 - 3.xL range.

Rotaries like to breath, especially a ported one, but even stock likes to have the most free-flowing exhaust it can get. Cats just restrict, and we already don't have any torque so what's another 0.001 rwtq loss gonna do to us? Not a whole lot

This "raspy" sound you speak of doesn't come from just removing the cats, it comes from people using bad/cheap mufflers. A good set of quality mufflers with a presilencer will not sound raspy at all. ****, I have a ported motor with ported exhaust, cut out exhaust diffusers (they're made to quiet the exhaust down) header to full 2.5" system straight to dual Ebay mufflers and it isn't even that "raspy." It's loud as ****, but it sounds more beefy than raspy to me.

One muffler can show better performance just because it is overall lighter and more straight through than a dual that has to split at the y-pipe. Will it show much of a difference? Noticeable difference? Probably not unless you're putting done tons of power. Besides we have cutouts for dual exhaust, put a single in there and it can look dumb to some people, however I still think it looks fine. And btw, a single exhaust will NOT be quieter, it will be MUCH louder. Think about it, 1 muffler instead of 2, durr.

look at my photo album for my exhaust.. its page 2 and 3... including the header my entire exhaust system cost just over 500$ with me doing the welding and fab work myself... a vid is on the 2nd page if you want to see how it sounds... nothing but compliments on my exhaust so far except from the old people lol

Ditto. It's all about your car and how much you want to spend.

With NA S4's you still need a cat though or you need to think of a way to support your 5/6th ports or you just lost 30hp.
Since you have an S5 you should be fine to ditch anything downline.

2.5 is the somewhat acknowledged sizing for NA stock ported motors.
It gives you enough back pressure to retain some torque while ditching cats and putting in a presilencer can help hp.

The rotary engine pushes exhaust right from the combustion chamber into the exhaust so our pulses are MUCH stronger than piston engines. That's why we can put on beefy turbo's that hondas only dream about.

Anyway back on topic.

Racingbeat is a great design. It is competitive with the Apexi N1 Duals and is quieter while not losing a lot of HP due to quieting.
Apexi N1 Duals are a straight through and louder than RB or stock.

The Cheapest is the Corksport single. It's around $320-350.
It is a single exit catback which comes in full 3 inch(for a turbo) or a 2.5inch tapered to 3inch(NA or stock turbo). IT IS LOUD IF you remove the cats on a NA.

I would not recommend removing cats on a NA. Get the Bonez down pipe with cat and presilencer. It will give you a nice deep growl with little to no rasp no matter what cat back.

bah I'm done ranting.

I had a question about the exhaust. Please show mercy on me. I just acquired my first FC(mostly stick to the FD's) and the exhaust is shot. I see the ssautochrome exhausts on ebay for relatively cheap. Anyone have this exhaust? If so, how is fitment? Nice and tight? Sound? quality of work and welds? Thanks.

Brent

Racing beat presilencer has a hookup for the aux port activation, or you can run it off the airpump dump tube, or the airpump to ACV tube, etc. Or, like me, you can remove the sleeves/actuators all together and blockoff the hole for the actuators.

So, what is the highest flowing quiet (close to stock sound) mufflers. Right now I am running gutted cats and stock mufflers. I want free flowing exhaust, but I want quiet. If the car gets too much louder, my wife says she's gonna put her foot up my ***.

Highest flowing and quiet, hmmm that makes things more difficult

RB would probably be the quietest high flowing exhaust, but it's expensive. Something like a Borla XR-1 might work well in a custom made system.

I'm only 19 :P

Not to offend you or your muffer but I thought that the idle sounded like it should have been at 3,500 RPM, and maybe it was just the microphone, but full-throttle was ear-splitting.

Haha, you don't wanna hear mine then

My idle is louder and more metally sounding. One of these days I'll get a video when I can get ahold of a camera.

haha no its not the microphone... the car is just loud as hell... any rotary with no cat and straight through exhaust are.... the microphone didnt even really capture the sound of it so imagine that... and Ddub is right his car is much louder because his is ported and the diffusers removed from the ports.... because of him im glad to know im not the only one stupid enough to have a ridiculously loud exhaust heh :P
