rx7 cupholder project

well it's been a week and i find i'm missing cup holders.

I took some measurements and fab'd up a cardboard mock up for testing purpose. It sits down inside my arm rest and the lid can close over it no problem. I'll see how this goes and then fab one up in plastic.

Thats a great idea, id never have thought of putting them in the center console. Id assume this would also be removable?

yeah it would be removable and will also be a full bottomed and sided box so if there is a spill in sits inside the plastic "box" instead of ruining your center console.

so far it has been working well and even held an almost full pop can when i lost traction doing a U-turn, I'm gonna make the plastic one as soon as i get a chance. I'm gonna post up the plans as well so anyone can make it.

have you tried driving the car with a cup there yet???

You may entirely re-think the idea then

yeah i drove it today a few times. Once with an XL tim hortons coffee cup and once with a can of coke and both times it was fine. The cup gets in the way of your elbow some time but it's easy to hold your arm a bit differently and not hit it.

The stock cup holder on my MX-3 is in the same position. When you have a large cup it can get in the way a bit, but you just hold your arm a different way. I think its a small price to pay if you really need a cup holder.

question for the S5 owners or anyone with experience with the S5 arm rest. does your lid(?) hit the passenger seat when opened? I don't have the bars to hold up the cover but even with it, it'll fail to stay open because it hits the passenger seat... is this normal or is something off in my car?

My S5 one rubs on the seats as well. both sides. But I have the big fat leather seats.

For my s5, I have been toying with the idea of relocating my mirror switch, fog light switch and security light to the dash somewhere, and replace the empty trim panel with a cupholder from an entirely different vehicle. I bet there's a salvage yard car that has something I can "graft in".....I am fairly adept at seemless integration where it involves the use of plastics. I know, it seems like a lot of work to do all that for a cupholder, but I'm driven by challenges like these. If I should come up with something that looks really good, I'll do a writeup with pics.

I've been wanting to get a cup holder also lately, I go look at them every time im at autozone, but the cheap ones are just that, cheap junk that looks like a cup will fly out of them, and the expensive ones look like the cheap junk ones that might work a bit, but I dont want to pay 10 bucks for a cup holder that slides into my vents.

rx7 vents can barely handle the weight of the louvers let alone a cup holder :p

go to a junk yard and get one from the radio area in the center console. I have one from a mid 90s Altima. put it above the cd player and the shifter wont interfere.

lol I bought that same one from ebay but I put it in my S13. It sort of sucked because if I pushed the seat forward it moved.

...buy a drinking/eating station thingy from walmart/autozone/advance lol. I have one in my storage bin, fits perfectly in there. It has 2 cupholders and space for food, kinda looks like this

I have drinks in there when I take on ramps at double the suggested speed limit, best thing the previous owner bought for the car

I looked at doing that also, but was worried if anything spilled it would get sucked into the CD player and kill it.

I use that. It's kind of a bitch to get in there with the GXL seats. My girlfriend says she doesn't really mind it being there when she's shotgun. She's not a fatty though so that helps.

Cool project but I just used the Ford Taurus cup holders that go underneath the radio. Fixs perfectly and it includes a nifty coin holder.
