RX7 Club, I need your advice on my build
This may be a bit of a read, but I would really appreciate advice/help/thought's....
I now have my first RX-7, I have been a DSM guy for a while, and Its time for a RWD rocket. I have posted up what I have in the Canadian Section.
I am planning a full build over the winter and want to show you what I plan and what I plan to get out of it, please tell me if I am way off and talk smack.....haha
Ok so we start with an S5 motor that blew an apex seal. Turbo was crap and spiked huge, motor ran way to rich and boom....
I have an Re Amemiya Turbo kit from Re in Japan :
Stuff I also have
TDO8 29B Mitsu Turbo
Custom Manifold
Re Amemiya Exhaust
Down Pipe
HKS Intake setup.
Greddy Profec B spec II and matching Turbo Timer
HKS FMIC
RPS 6 Puck Clutch
Cusco Suspension
The motor will be going to RX7 Specialties in Calgary, Canada for a street port build, 3mm Apex Seals, machined Rotors and possibly new Housings.
On my list of stuff I need I have the following:
Power FC and Commander
HKS SSQ
720cc Primary's and 1300cc Secondary's
255 Fuel Pump or FD Pump ( which is better for this application ? )
External Wastegate - Tial 38mm or do I need bigger ?....ie : 46mm
Anything else you would suggest/need ?
I am aiming for 375-400 WHP @ 13psi on pump ( 94 ) I want the motor to last so a conservative tune will be in order, I know close to 500 could be attainable with this build but wont the reliability stage lower then?
Also, this FC Tune thing I am reading about on the PFC Thread, anyone know about it or would suggest it? I like the 2 step RL and Anti Lag system.
I really appreciate any help given, please critisize or change things around if you think is nessesary.
One other thing, Bridgeport, for my build would you suggest this? I hear bad things from this only resorting to the motors durability and will not last long.
Here is a picture of the car its all going into and the turbo......

I've never even heard of anyone using a Power FC on a 2nd gen. How often is this done? You better get Steve Kan to tune this thing.
I think most people consider 400whp to be around the limit of the stock T2 drivetrain. Have you upgraded your differential mount? Those things like to break, and you can get a competition mount from Mazdatrix.

sense your getting it built, get s4 TII rotors. if you can get a PFC for a FC more power to you but if its hard to get then i would just go with haltach or something

sweet,
turbo verts are the best 2nd gen you can get. I am a little ahead of you in the motor, ems, and turbo section, but you are way ahead of me in the body and paint. I also have that front end and it has been in my loft for almost a year. I just have not really had any time to throw it on the front end. Get it together and we can race them this summer.
You are best off getting a custom turbo from www.precisionturbo.net these guys rock.

the apexi Power FC is for FD's...........
I would say your power goals are inline with your parts...but when nearing the 400 mark I would say the walbro 255 may be almost peaked out....and thats one part (especially at that power leve) that you DONT want to be lacking in...

As Aaron said, go with 1600's. Ford sells them, and fairly cheap at that. It's one thing Ford makes very well
Don't go with the Power FC. If you want standalone, go with a Megasquirt, Haltech, Microtech, etc. In my personal opinion, I'd say go with a Microtech. Can't really beat it dollar/dollar, especially if you're not electronically-inclined. The Megasquirt is more for a person willing to build an entire wiring harness, completely make their own fuel maps, and completely BUILD the ECU. Microtech's come with a wiring harness, a base for you're specific car, and is extremely accurate (not 80's tech. like Megasquirt- which leads to the ECU having a bit of lag..)
The HKS SSQV is does not have the best of reputation at this point. It sounds mega-cool, and is supposed to be really good at it's job, but theres been quite of few horror stories of it causing massive surge on turbo's.. You should go with either a nice GReddy Type R, or a ported FD BOV.
For the 2-step you were talking about, almost ANY ECU can do a 2-step. Not just the ones that say they can (Haltech displays it proudly :-P)
You should go with a 46-50+mm wastegate for this setup. IF you ever decide to maximize you're engines potential, would you rather have to buy a bigger wastegate to handle all the boost? Or would you rather have one that will control what you boost now extremely effectively, and do you're maximum power just as well? Hmm? Do something once, and do it right for ever...
I'd say Walboro 255 fuel pump for this power category. As I said before, if you ever plan on going for more power, you can always run dual Walboro's .
All this aside (and yes, I know I wrote a bit much O.O), you have an extremely nice 'Vert. Looking foward to seeing it up and running! *Get it out of the snow! Rust! Ahhh!*

That vert is GEORGOUS. If you wanna go with 1600's for the secondaries www.kgparts.com has them pretty damn cheap.

Thanks for the comments guys!! Sorry for replying so late, I have been really busy.
The PFC can be used on S5's and its already comming from Japan new. I have read nothing but good things about it with rotary's and its a very under rated EMS.
I agree with my power goals the turbo is to big, but it came with the car ( separatley ) and is a custom kit from Re for an S5 motor. Yes its a 25psi turbo for around 500hp, but I think 16psi ish will be good for 400.....I was thinking 13psi, but thats not gonna happen. I would love to run 500hp @ 25psi, but i want this **** to last. I am coming from a 350WHP DSM that was running 12's, daily and steet drivin @ 3800ft above sea level. I put 22 000K on last summer with nothing but regular plug changes and oil changes. I am not gonna drive the FC daily.
Thanks for the advice on injectors and BOV's, I will have to read up on BOV's with these applications and what seems to work best. I thought the HKS SSQ was invincible but I guess I was wrong.
Anyone know of a renound tuner in western Canada? Tuning is something I take seriously and I dont wanna mess around!
Also, advice on getting a motor built from say Rotary Resurrection or RX7 Store? And has does anyone have any thought's on Adam @ RX7 Specialties in Calgary?
Thanks

the p-fc will be more than adequate to control your setup.
and to dispel all the myths about the p-fc being available for the fc.
it IS available. it's not super-rare, but it's definitely not common.
the ones for the fc are re-calibrated fd units.
AP Engineering in Japan makes them.
i'm almost certain the price is higher than the fd unit prices.
