RX-7 Transmissions
I have a few questions for a Mazda expert.
How many different transmissions were used in 2nd gen RX-7's? \
How well do they handle full throttle shifting?
Do turbo & n/a engines use the same clutch disc & bell housing pattern?
Are the axle shafts & diff strong enough for 6000 rpm+ launch?
I am thinking about offering a kit to put a T-56 into 2nd gen cars.

1) 3 trannys - manual for n/a, manual for tii, and auto for n/a
2) shifting at full throttle on a good tranny :o) awesome...
3) both the n/a and turbo uses the same bell housing pattern but the clutch discs are different in terms of thickness (from what i was told)
4) launching at 6k rpm? i haven't tried that...but i would imagine the tii's driveline should be able to handle it...not sure...

Re: RX-7 Transmissions
The TII clutch is 235mm 87-88, 240mm 89-92. The NA clutch is 225mm.

Note that the T-56 does not handle high-rpms well, so this would only be a good idea for low-rpm rotaries.

The NA trannies aren't the strongest as far as holding power - somewhere in the 200hp range is where you start having problems.
The TII drivetrain is REALLY strong - the tranny can really take a lot of power and abuse. Once you get into the 400hp ballpark, 3rd gear can be a problem and can break - that's about it. The rear end and halfshafts are pretty strong, but don't cotton to wheel hop - that will kill a diff. Again, that starts to be a problem in the 400+ HP area.
