RX-7 Quiz

I'm driving home from work today...open road, accelerating in 3rd gear...... strange pop - sudden loss of power..... engine keeps running but sounds like a sewing machine.... lots of backfire..... limp all the way home at 30 mph in second gear.

What is it??

p.s. I know what it is, I just can't get myself to say it yet....

Repeat after me "blown engine". There, that wasn't so bad.

Now say "Street port rebuild". Now that was even better.

Good luck,

Mike

Actually, you can stay in denial a bit longer. One last hope - Are all of your sparkplugs still there?

ROFL....

Excellent suggestion..

After that, if the plugs are all there, check to see of a squirrel has become attached to a belt and you'r slinging him around.

I can come up with more to assist with the denial process if you request.

Lots of money needs to be spent

Driver error.
Check your muffler bearings. Sounds like you blew one out. Its either that or the flux capacitor

as dumb as that sounds i had a spark plug come loose one day, car just started loosing power, running on one rotor then wouldn't start, the leading plug on the back rotor had come loose enough to loose compression all together

LOL, the reason I posted that is because I had the same symptoms that he described when my 84 Camaro blew a sparkplug out of the engine while driving on the freeway. BTW, it cost me all of my Christmas money ($100) to get the diagnostics done just to find out that the moron who put my sparkplugs in didn't tighten them. That was when I decided to do the maintenence on my car myself, whenever possible.

Nope, no squirrels..... and the sparkplugs are where they should be.... it's sinking in that I won't have my vert running for the prime summer driving season. Everything was going so great... What a pain in the *** this is. I'm not excited about pulling the motor on the thing. Any takers for a nice red 88 vert with a *bbb-blown eeeee-engine*??

Why dont you try doing a compression test on your motor???

I cracked a seal in mine and it still ran, once you got it past 4000rpm it ran fine. As if it never had a cracked seal.

Just a thought.... Good luck with it.

Man thats not how you advertise. You say "88 vert, perfect condition, just needs an apex seal" Thats what everyone does around here in the local auto shopper, like an apex seal is an easy fix.

So I had a drink or 2, thought about it, checked around.... maybe I can deal with putting in a rebuilt engine. Cost : $1300-2200, depending on various levels of porting, etc. Are there other reasonable options so I can use my vert again for everyday use? Im missing it already......
