rx-7 Newbie, soon to be owner of a 2nd gen.

hey whats up guys..my names Calvin and i love Supras. in order to save up for my dream, i need a car and a job, the job part is just about taken care of and i need a car. well my aunt's husband just happens to have an old 2nd gen (red, auto) rx-7, that they have left outside for the past who knows how many years. =\. yea i know its probably a sad things for you rx-7 enthusiasts to hear about. well last year i was at my cousin's birthday party and my aunt told me they're thinking about giving it to the salvation army, so im thinking..since i need a car, im going to ask her to give it to me as a beater (sorry if that offends anyone) so, i asked a friend of mine if he has any advice on rx7's, he just said go to rx7club.com and you'll get all the answers you need. coming from i-supra.com (a Supra forum), i am a senior member there (not asking for anyone to treat me as one here) but im just saying that i know my Supras and i know how forums work. so, i'd appreciate if everyone keeps cool while i bombard this forum with newbie questions like...how can you tell from s4 and s5 (seriously) im going to go head over to my aunts house after they get back from vegas and im going to get some details about the rx-7. so if anyone can reply this thread with some facts that would help me out. be my guest. or lead me to a fact page that you guys might have. thanks!

There is a FAQ for FCs at the top of this forum. If you read that it should answer most of the questions you may have, and give a ton of useful information. Congrats on getting the Rx-7, although it is an auto, which in these cars pretty much kills the performance of them Maybe start looking into a 5-speed swap if you are serious about keeping the car, it will make a night and day difference. And welcome to the cult........er forum

hey man thanks for the warm welcome..and yes i've been reading on the rx-7 but since im a Supra dude, everythings changed. and yea i was really thinking about a 5spd swp, but since I AM saving for a Supra, budget wont permit me for that.....well im thinking Supra-wise. so how much would an auto-5spd cost me? what i want to do with the rx7 is probably just get a cheap macco paint job, have everything brought back to stock trim and see what goes on from there. any suggestions guys?

If the problem is with the transmission, it would probably be cheaper to swap to a 5-speed.

Supra=$$$

RX-7=$$$

RX-7 as a car to save $$$= not likely.

Given its an N/a it won't be tons of cash like a TII for a turbo rebuild and all tha doohikies. lol!

An N/a will be 90% reliable and won't cost too much. But guessing by you wanting just a cheap ride go find a nice little honda or toyota and ride around in it. Those kind of cars usually don't break stuff. The only reason I see it as a problem is because I am very partial to the RX so I don't like people seeing them as beater cars treating them as cheap transport.

For one you will need to learn about the rotary engine which is fairly easy but you have to be willing. Then you have to remember that not all the parts are readily available for an RX-7 at your local auto parts store. You may need to send away for some parts and some may be more expensive than you think.

BUT perhaps you will fall in love with the RX like we here usually are and give up your hopes of owning one of those over weight whales called supras.

If you don't spend money on modding it, it'd be a great daily driver. Things will break just as much as your typical honda/toyota (oh noes! the brakes!).

But welcome to the nuthouse.

i never said "cheap transport" yes i need the car to get me from here to there, but i never said i was gonna treat it like crap. please..i dont even throw "cool looking boxes" away!

This should be plenty to get you started.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...to+manual+swap

Also, I see that you are only 16. Have you ever driven a Supra? Or any other higher end performance car for that matter? Not trying to be an ***, but dont save up and buy a car that you havent even experienced, just because you think it looks good and can be fast. The "feel" of a car is way more important than all out power. For example, I wanted a TT Stealh or 3000GT Vr-4 for the longest time. Then I actually went and test drove one. I was so excited at 1st, but after about 15 minutes of driving, I realized that I really didnt like these cars. They were fast, yes. Much faster than my FC I have now, but it felt like I was driving a fast Caddilac. there was just no soul to the car, felt dead. My Rx-7 is by far the most fun car Ive ever driven (close 2nd is a miata) and these are both relatively "slow" cars. Go test drive a bunch of different cars, to see which one best fits what you want. Just something to think about.

As for your S4 or S5 question. ASSUMING that the car is still stock/unmodded.

S4 = 86-88 model year
S5 = 89-91 model year

Since he wants it as a daily driver, I suggest not spending a dime on it other than maintenance (oil & filter, plugs, ect.) just like any other car. Don't even worry about the tranny. It's free, it's not what you want ultimately, so why waste your money?

Guys, RX-7s are driven by people that aren't obsessed like us, believe it or not.

I agree w/ Zach. If his intention to use this car as his temporary car until he saves enough for his Supra,...he should just do the basic maintenance. There is no need to perform excessive upgrades.

Lesson the 1st: Read the FAQ.

Lesson the 2nd: Ignore everything that Mephis says.

Lesson the 3rd: See http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/buy1.htm

AaronCake-i read the FAQ, it doesnt really help with too much (no offense to the writter of the FAQ). and thanks for the How To Buy page, ill probably have that printed out for when i go over to my aunts house.
Zach-i also agree with you, haha...but the only reason im thinking of a 5spd swap is for the fun factor.
rxmfn7-i think you have gotten the wrong impression. first off im not the go fast go furious "KID, or probably ricer." as you perceive me to be....i like the Supra, not because it goes VR00M in fast & furious (havent even seen either of the movies) or because everyone likes it. im deeply attracted to its fabulous body lines and fabulous 2jz-gte platform. but enough about Supras. thanks for your "input" anyway.
i still have lots to learn about the s4/s5 guys, so just bear with me here.

oh yea, and i do appreciate the
hospitality here, you guys are all nice....well..fairly nice. this will probably be my new permenant second home (replacing i-supra).

just get the 2nd gen and see if you like it or not. Who knows, you might like it so much that your love for the supra is gone. If you want a daily driver and want to save money, leave it as it is and fix whatever is needed to get it to run properly then focus on whether you wanna swap in in 5spd or start modding.

Rx7 = $$$ and patience.

Wow you sounded just like me!!

Wow you sounded just like me except that i am a little older and am not a senior forum. I brought a 87 supra nonturbo thinking that it was going to be a fast car and it was. But after getting the car i found out that i hate big cars. You might love the 7 if you can fix all of it's problem or problems. OH yeah i am also getting a FC very soon. Calvin is there a reason that car was not in use for such a long time??

well....im guessing the rx7 was my uncle's "fun car" along with a motorcycle, until the kids were born, then he got a chevy astro. it just sat there for years and years til they moved, he drove it once to take his kids to school. and move it to the new house. so thats how i know its at least drivable. but the tires rest on wooden blocks, which give me the impression that the brakes arent working too well? im going to ask for details when they return from vegas. i hope everything turns out for myself, because i really need a car for work!
