rx-7 newbie with quick question

not an owner, but i have a shop in kansas city, and this kid brought an 87 rx7 that he just put a 13b motor in. he's stopped in periodically while troubleshooting, and now he's stuck.

when you start the car, it'll idle fine, but when you are in first starting out, until about 5k it'll run reaaaal haggard, jerking, and shaking, and choking. real hesitant, and i don't know enough about these cars to know where to start. anyone ever experienced anything like this?

i searched too. so don't flame me yet.

you could have a bad spark, and the timing could be way off, gummed injectors, etc... basic stuff kinda like a regular car.

sounds like it might be a primary injector problem either dirty stuck or bad connection or wire.

My guess would be fuel delivery.

Can you free rev it in neutral past 5000 RPM? Also, does being on the gas hard affect the trigger point?

Search around the forum for the factory service manual. I don't have a link handy right now. They've got some very good troubleshooting flowcharts to follow.

tell him to check his plug wires... he might've put it backwards (personal experience)

Trailing plugs are the top ones and the leading plugs are lower ones...

T = Top
L = Low
