I am thinking of replacing the seals I got in the engine now with some of the RA seals. My seals are worn to 7.1mm so I would have to replace the short springs the minimum is 6.5mm I figure get some new ones for 165 with new springs that are 8mm wouldnt be bad. My housings are in good shape also, obviously not as good as new ones but I dont want to pay 800+ for some new housings...

I'm at about 2200 miles on the seals with no problems.

Interesting thread.

Is RWS = RA, or they are different company ?
I'm a little confuse...

I have them in my car, rebuild with some used housings, not horrible, but not perfect. I haven't actually put any miles on the car(college), but it starts right up every time. Granted idle is at 1500, but i suspect that will go down once i actually start driving it.

You know, I haven't even bothered to check the compression. The engine starts, idles, and runs perfectly and I am more than happy with its power output and especially low-end / midrange torque. So I have never felt inclined to get out the compression gauge. Maybe I will hook it up one of these days for kicks.

OK, just got another motor running. Ran it for ten minutes and then did a compression check - average of 100! This is on the RA seals and used rotor housings. As a side note the corner seals and side seals are also new and the end plates were in great shape.

I have them in 5 engines now. All are doing well. I found them well manufactured. I have no intention of ripping a motor apart to check wear so, unless a motor pop's I will assume they are great.

I will continue to purchase these seals.

mr gadget, are these motors n/a or turbo? it doesn't take much to make a seal that lasts in a naturally aspirated car...i am worried about longevity with a turbo, and the ability to take boost without cracking

RA claims to have 4k miles on a turbo II with their seals. I have a set on order and will rebuild my TII with them, guess I'll let you know how they work out once broken in.

I'm assembling my ported 6-port engine in a few days using the RWS seals. Used rotor housings were a solid 7 on the 1-10 scales. Glad to hear the good news on the seals.

2 TII
3 NA

Keep in mind, any 2mm seal has a breaking point as you boost away. If I were a boostaholic, I would build myself a motor with 3MM seals.

Ken Scheepers has decided to try a set of the 2mm's in his new motor with this being the off-season.
Anyone not familiar he runs in the NHRA All-Motor class and has a best 10.21. He runs pports with 55mm throttle bodies and alcohol. He launches at 11k and runs up to 13k. So while the motors are not turbo'd they sure as hell see some serious abuse.
Ken gave me two more new housings to pport just like the last time. See https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...5&pagenumber=4

Ken takes his motors to the engine dyno at Rotary Performance and they have the factory compression tester with printout so he can give a great test environment for these seals.
He ran some Renesis rotors with stock seals. The Renesis seals are about 2/3 the height of non-Renesis. He put the motor on the dyno and the first pull a seal let go at 9k. I have the housing here. Not a pretty site.
Renesis rotors are 10:1 CR but the seals are not going to work.

Fortunately you can use the older corner seals and just machine the slots deeper for the non-Renesis apex seals. So next weekend I will finish the port work and and it won't take long for Ken to get it together and dyno.

To me from all the RA seals that have been sold and knowing most people have been using old housings the no news is good news theory works for me. From everything I have been able to find there have not been any failures. I find that hard to believe but still I have not seen otherwise. So my gut feeling is real good on these. We'll see

Scalliwag, does RP have a dyno up there? I'm trying to find one somewhere other than Pro Tech in Austin.
