Rust

Hey, I am about to pick up for sure a White 89 N/A FC

There is rust on the wheel well, the left side can be sanded and painted but the right needs to be cut and welded. I am willing to fix it, but if its done right, will the rust go away?

Since this is a common problem, what do you guys do to take care of your car?

Well, if you remove all the rust it will "go away", right? However, rust is insidious and if you see some on the surface at one site, there is likely more rust elsewhere on the car that is not obvious. Make sure there is no serious rust in areas that count like suspension mounting points and other key points on the underbody. In your area it is something you will likely have to live with by periodically removing and patching rusted areas as you find them.

Rust is probably common in your area, but not necessarily in other parts of North America, or the world for that matter. Not much you can do to prevent rust if you drive the car in Winter when salt is applied to the wet/slushy/snow-covered roads. You can periodically spray off the underside of the car including the wheel wells and that may help a bit, but it won't get rid of the rust already present. You could always move to southern Arizona and that would also limit the rust.

Rust usually covers a much greater area than is visible as it originates from the inside out. Be prepared to cut both sides out and do some time consuming body work.

Rust never goes away.

Any and all rust would need to be replaced with panels that don't have any rust on them for the rust to "go away"
