Rust=Cancer?

I am thinking about buying an 88' TII with some mods, a few dings, and a quarter sized spot of rust on the drivers right rear fender. The bottoms of the doors are also showing a little on the inside. Should I just buy it and try to cure the cancer? Or wait and find a really nice mint TII?

You had better be prepared to do some cutting- or replace the entire panels that are rusted. That **** is hard to get rid of.

I use the same anology when associating rust on cars. If left untreated, It will spread!

As for rust on the FC you are looking at, try finding one that doesn't have any on It. It will be hard to find. Use your Instinct really.

If the price is right & the rest of the car is in good working order, go for it. It sounds minor to me...
Fix it and then use a ton of undercoating underneath and keep wax on the outside... Use touchup paint on stone chips ect. Don't let bare metal be exposed.
The best bet is to not let it get started, but if you see it start anywhere deal with it ASAP! Good luck/skill!

Whow, sounds like cool stuff and they have a reseller here in Holland aswell. I just bought myself an RX7 that needs some work in the rust department aswell.

I'm thinking about treating the places with rust first. sanding off the rust, painting it with this stuff, and let it be after that until I have all the other things fixed on my car and then eventually to repair the rusted parts by welding in new body work and such. Is this the right way of doing this? Its my first attempt at doing these sortof things and I have no idea what the do's and don't are?

Any good sites out there about repairing rusted away areas on your car?

I'll never buy a car with rust again. The stuff is cancer, easiest way to put it. Once it starts it's costly to fix and many times it comes back.

Just hold out for a car that mint with no rust. That's what I'm gonna do.

G2 Racer,

An 18 year old car without rust? The only cars you'll find without any rust our those that have been stripped bare, repaired and treated at great expense and painted hopefully correctly. Or a very very very lucky find. Well atleast in this end of the world where it is always bad weather and only the really lucky have a good garage... .

Atleast that is my opinion. but you are right, rust is a menace. I just want to stop it from getting to worse as there doesn't seem to be that much rust on my car yet. Only the sides where it has been jacked up are in bad shape asfar as I can tell.

If I ever have the money, time, and the car is worth it, I might strip it completely, repair it, and then get it galvanised or something.. that should take care of it for ever if I ever get really rich that is........

No matter what, even if the rust is not eating away majorly at the metal, it will continue to return if you don't get every bit off. My brother has a Nissan 240SX S14 and it had a little rust on the wheel well. We wet sanded it, bondo-d it up, and filled in the rust area, and now it's starting to eat away through the fresh coat of paint. Hahah... the irony Sess.... you have a 240 too, sr powered too.. My bro wants an Sr... or go crazy with an RB26... werd.

No kidding, I've always wanted a DMC12. My friend has one and I took it to my prom this year. It turned a lot of heads when I pulled up to the curb and opened the gull wings. But man, it was scary to drive, I kept feeling like it was going to die on me...

Rust IS cancer, and like cancer, the only way to remove it is to cut it out and weld in new metal. Remember that the rust you see is only about 20% of the problem...

And BTW, rust is a big problem on the DeLorean as well. The frame is made of thin steel, coated with an epoxy. The epoxy will crack, allowing moisture underneath, thus rusting out the frame. Common areas are the front crumple zones, suspension and around the engine.

kim, hey its true isn't it, they didn't correctly rustproof most cars till the early 90ies!

n4ji maybe your friend should check his engine, mine is set a bit low idle because of emmision test I had to go to last week and I haven't set it back but normally it purs like a kitten and goes pretty good. Took alot of work to get it there though. If he never has, tell him to check his injectors and fuel lines. They tent to get blocked after 20 years of life.

Aaron, yeah rust sucks, no way around that. Delorean doesn't suffer much from it, indeed when the epoxy breaks.... then again, for $10.000 you can get one of those stainless frames:-) (not that I have 10k to spend)
Mine is okay though, no rust on the main frame. Only on torsion bars and such.
