Running without any exhaust?
I have this really crappy 120k-ish used engine that I'm going to use to temporarily resurrect my engineless car. It's been sitting for a while and I put a little ATF in it a while back so I expect it to smoke like a bitch when I start it up, assuming it even starts. I don't want to ruin my cats any more than they already are (I tried this trick with my old, dead engine), so I was thinking I might just let it blow all it's **** out with just the manifold on there and nothing else. Anyone ever ran an engine with no exhaust on it whatsoever? What should I expect? Will zero back pressure screw it up? Will flames shoot out and ignite my car?
Thought I might get some metal ducting or something to at least pipe the **** away from my car...

first off, dont run the engine without an exhaust bolted up... a non turbo rotary is by far the loudest thing on the planet... (yes i've driven 40 miles without mufflers just open manifold) dude, it was rediculous, the whole car shakes from sound vibrations, cops/people will be able to hear you from at LEAST a mile away.. just get an exhaust on there...
I could understand if you had open HEADERS with just a race pipe running to the side of the car. that's even LOUDER...

Hmm, well, if it was only for 15 minutes or so, I am hoping to be kind of out in the woods when I do it... And I'll definitely wear ear protection...

So you mean no exhaust from where back??? If you have absolutely no manifold you're going to fill your engine bay with flames, so make sure you have at least headers on it. And like everyone has said an na will be the loudest thing you've ever heard.

do you have any mechanic freinds, see if their shop will lend you a rubber shop exhaust hose. The ones the hook up to the tail pipes and than stick out the door. That will make it a little better and you also won't die from poisonous gasses when working under the hood
It is LOUD!!!!

I mean no exhaust from the manifold back.. so at least whatever comes out is consolidated into a single hole..
I'm afraid I don't have any mechanic friends. It really sucks, I have to learn all this **** the hard way because of it. I have friends who have worked on cars but somehow they still don't know anything or are afraid to try stuff... so here I am.

You will be fine as long as you have a manifold, but as mentioned, it will be loud. I'm not sure you can fully appreciate exactly how loud until you have experienced it. Use earplugs.

Man you guys are all soft!!
It's not that bloody loud, don't worry about ear protection!
and someone said earlier it will idle at about 2k?
no, it should idle exactly the same as it did before you took the exhaust off.

Manifold and the exhaust sleeve keep it quiet compared to old motors. You won't hurt the motor nor your ears if you just lug it around. I started a bridgeport once with open headers and exhaust ports roughly the size of 2 in. X 1 1/4in. WOW that was loud even in my book, but you stock S4 motor with manifold is ok.

OK here's another question... since I'm doing this partly because I don't know whether this engine will even run or not, could I also start it without bothering with the clutch, flywheel or tranny? Like obviously it will run but will running it with no flywheel or anything else cause it to idle at high RPMs? I'm assuming it would but what do I know.. So maybe I can not only do this loud, but REALLY gdf'in loud.. that'll be good
