Running waaay too rich on fuel

Hello Everyone.

My 87' Turbo II I picked up won't run worth a crap and pours out black smoke. It also smells strongly of fuel.

To me it seems like its getting way to much fuel. Does this sound like thats the case?

If so, what could I try to correct that?

Thanks

after looking at it again today, I think it may be that its not getting too much fuel, but instead rather not burning all of what it is getting.

I think maybe a coil pack isnt working. Anyways I can test this without actually replacing it?

well the black smoke is defiantly too much fuel. thats what it usually is and you can smell it. I dont think its getting too much fuel though. I think its just not igniting it all. like a piston or something isn't sparking. when i start it up it just drowns in fuel.

There could be a number of reasons why the car is belching black smoke.

Could be as simple as a bad spark plug, coil or wire. Pull the plugs and look at the electrodes. A plug that is sopping wet with fuel is going to show you where the problem is. You can test for spark at the coils using a spark tester, available at the auto parts store for a few dollars. Alternativly, just lay a spark plug on the fender.

If it's not an ignition issue, it could be a stuck fuel injector. Sometimes they will stock open and literally pour fuel into the engine. This is usually easy to spot since the car will flood wildly and fuel puddles will drip from the exhaust. If you power up the fuel pump without running the engine, you can also hear the fuel being sprayed into the intake.

Could also be a blown engine. See this page: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/blown.htm

Thanks everyone. It turns out that my one coil pack isn't firing. I have a couple questions about it. First thing is which is the primary and which is the trailing coil? I assume that the smaller coil pack with the single connector is the trailing but i'm not sure.

Anyway, it's the smaller one that's not firing. There is a third little black wire with a plastic connector on it that is left blank. I beleive this is probabley a test wire that shouldn't be connected but I thought that I would just make sure.

Thanks

Yep, the smaller ignitor is the primary ignitor (aka leading)
