Dang! All these horrible mileage stories are popping up.

What kind of driving? How does it run? Error codes? Bad thermosensor? Ignition system in good shape - plugs/wires, timing? The o2 sensor can have some effect but not that much. Low compression will raise fuel consumption. Clogged air filter? Fuel leak? Fuel pressure reg. bad? TPS adj'd?

Just a couple of ideas.

For reference: mine's mildly modded and I still get around 20MPG.

i was getting about 150 miles to a full tank when i first got my 88 TII....
ITS A FUEL LEAK....
park it now or else your car will burn...
I had 3 seperate leaks..
1-Pulsation dampener
2-nasty clogged injectors
3-old fuel lines

i thought it was just running rich, but the loss in milage led me and my friend to think otherwise....
just jump the fuel system while the car is off, and you WILL smell fuel and a lot of it.....
the next phase is finding the leaks
trust me though.....spare your 7 and dont drive it while it has fuel leaks.....

just a thought from someone who was in the same ship about 3 months ago...im sure other will agree

Does the exhaust smell of fuel? Black smoke? Does the exhaust glow red after driving?

If the answer is "yes", then you are running rich and should do the following:

1. Replace: plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, O2 sensor
2. Test: water thermo sensor (on water pump), oil temp sensor
3. Clean: injectors (have it professionally done)

If the answer to the above question is "no", then you may have a leak and you should CAREFULLY inspet the entire fuel system with the fuel pump running. To run the pump without running the car, jumper the yellow test connector at the passenger shock tower and set the ignition key to "ON" but don't start the car. Now visually inspect the system. Leaks should be fairly obvious. Do this with the car COLD.

good luck with the clock problem...
mine only comes on when it wants to....usually when its really cold for some odd reason...
the fix for that is to take out the idiot light cluster and have someone who is handy with soder to re-soder all the connections....there is also one to buy one ebay right now that has apparently already had this done...id say just fix your own, instead of buying a new one...im sure it wont cost much to get a professional to do it.....which brings up a question of it own.....does anyone know of any shops like circuit city or radio shack that will soder stuff for someone....i need to get mine fixed and dont feel confident enough to solder it all my self....

if u cant smell raw fuel while or after driving then I seriously doubt you have a fuel leak, it should be fairly obvious...bad leaky injectors will cause hard starting and flooding (also obvious). get your car tuned up (plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor). dont drive hard on the tank after and see where u land. everyone agree??

Question: clogged fuel filter can make the car run rich? Also...jumping the fuel pump without the car running, that's not bad for the pump is it? Will it just pressurize the fuel system so you can find the leak? And by jump do you mean just feed it 12v from the battery?

I do not see how a clogged fuel filter could make it run rich. However, anything is possible and it could not hurt to change it.

No, running the fuel pump with the engine off is fine. To run the pump with the engine off do this.

1. Place ignition to on posistion.
2. Locate yellow, two pin connector. This is near your boost sensor which is bolted to your right front shock tower. The yellow connector will be behind the boost sensor and follow the outer perimeter of the shock tower. You will find it. It is not connected to anything and on short wires.
3. Take a piece of electrical wire and bend it in a U shape (about 2-3" of wire)
4. Then, "jump" the yellow connector by placing each lead in the respective pin.
5. You should hear the fuel lines pressurize.
6. Hunt for your leak.
7. Good luck

James

btw, everyone basekly said what to check, i had one on the hose that goes from the fuel filter to the engine, cheap hose, cheap fix

for an NA is the yellow connector still near the front right shock tower? My 88 has a stong fuel smell as soon as the temp outside hits freezing. I took it to mazda recently and they said that there are no leaks. but i think they let the car warm up in the heated shop and then checked the fuel lines. I'd like to check it for myself next time it gets cold enough.

thanks

It's in the same spot on all cars (unless someone really got creative and moved it or isn't running a stock harness)

The sensor under the oil filter is strickly for the temp gauge in the car.
