runnin straight pipe and eliminating cat?

whats up guys,
got a 88 GXL N/A....

thinkin of runnin a straight pipe from my headers back to the y, eliminating the cat altogether (emissions is not a concern)... i thought i read before that someone did this, and had to have double mufflers then? (2 on each side?) since they took the cat out. was this because the mufflers would blow, or because the setup was just way too loud?

and which is the best sounding muffler? loudness is no concern with me, i like to hear my baby roar hahahah. but i want it to sound good (throaty is better than ricey if possible)

ive heard everyone recommend racing beat, are they good solid mufflers? good sound? could i get away with running just 1 of them on each side without them blowing out ina month?

also kicking around...
has anyone ever removed the y setup and ran just 1 side exhaust?
is that even possible?

yeah, i dont know too much about cars, but i read shtuff on here everyday so im gettin there slowly i guess hahaha

You have an s4, so if you eliminate the cats, then your aux ports would no longer work. They work off of backpressure from a pickup tube in the stock cats. You can get the RB presilencer and it has the pickuptube on it as well, but you also have to get the rb downpipe or header to connect to it. All in all, that is a better investment than aftermarket mufflers, anyway. As for mufflers, RB makes a very good quality, and good sounding muffler. I have never actually heard of anyone running two mufflers per side, except maybe once. Its a custom jub and really not needed as you can almost always find an exhaust to fit your sound levels. Generally, the duals (like RB) are quiter, and singles (like apex N1 or corksport) are louder.

also if you live in PA then you will have to worry about emissions soon so i wouldnt butcher anything to badly cause that cat is going to have to go back in soon

why exactly is this? why wont the RB presilencer and stock headers work? or do they just need some fabbing?

even if not required by law, I think a lot more people should be worried about emmissions. Do you know how bad the emmissions would be without a catalytic convertor? Maybe your car doesn't have to pass a test, but is it worth the decreased health on your own behalf? I say this in an attempt to save the world of a few thousands pounds of CO2, and not to mention the fact that I used to have an 83' RX-7 on which I installed a straight pipe, the fumes would burn my eyes at time and make me not want to breath, I wonder how the people behind me felt. I'll pass on cancer, especially when there are alternatives like a high flow catalytic convertor. Just my $.02, peace

hmmm *worried* I have an 88 GTU and the little backpressure line (small metal pipe going from cat to I think my air pump) was broken off. Does that mean this whole time I have been running without using my aux port? (the aux port adds more air and HP at high rpm correct?)

All I remember is that, that little pipe was busted off but still hanging there but someone filled the cat hole will metal. (welding of some sort) im guessing to stop the exaust leak. Also when I bought the car the air pump belt wasnt on it, and when I added it it made my car sound tons better, AND my car backfired anywhere after 4k RPM. That makes me pretty happy but .. I wonder if its because of that pipe being gone?

Thanks sorry if this is a stupid question.
