royal purple? good or bad

who uses royal purple synthetic gear oil

i used it in my s4/na

well... 200 miles later. after i did the swap... i now have my bearings making noises.
now.
i had some one tell me that they have heard not so great things for synthetic gear oil in older tranies.
mine has 180k miles on it

please post if you have had this problem with synthetic messing with bearings

I haven't had a problem with Neo, which is synth. I have it in all 3 of my cars.

What?? thats crazy!

I run Royal P in my tranny on my 83 FB, it runs great. I had a third gear syncro that was jacked up it stopped that problem and I feel a difference in power!

Are you sure its not just the 180k on the bearings that caused this.

PS Turbotime your crazy bro!

I've used it in most, if not all, of my personal racecars, and while I am currently running RedLine in the trans and diff of the GTUs, RP Racing 21 is going in the motor very soon (I'm at about 600 miles on a fresh S5 engine).

I've got redline in my tranny and diff and I knoticed that it goes into gear a little better then before. Or could be the fact the oil I drained out was 19 yr old though.

I have no experience with it but my friend, who owns a 240, hated it. He drained his tranny of RP after a week of using it.

If you're asking me, he said it made his tranny "whir" and shifting became very clunky.(thats a better word )

I just followed what most of the head hanchos around here use, Redline MT-90. As a matter of fact I just realized my shipment of it must have came in today while i was at work.

I don't understand why highly reputable racing shops would offer Royal Purple if it's as bad as all you are saying...

No one said it was bad...all great products can't be useful/helpful/perfect/etc for 100% of the market.

i have seen more failures in engines, transmissions and differentials using synthetics than non sythetics so IMO the claims that they protect more than conventional oils is bogus, you can throw up any sheets documenting crap but i will believe my eyes and my past history with lubricants over anyone elses "tests".

i havnt replaced the tranny fluid on my RX-7 but the tranny was rebuilt less then 10,000 miles ago, but on my dads old miata we replaced his fluid with redline and it worked great, shifting got smoother and it never had any problems, i forget weather or not it was synthetic tho. havnt really herd all that much about royal purple tho. good luck.

ya. rp made my **** better...... but...... it kinda gave my bearings a one 2. i do have 180k miles on my car. engine and all. it was perfectly fine till i got RP in it. then the bearings started making noise.... i guess the racing stuff isnt the best for old bearings like i have.
time for a new one!!!
btw. i'll be the 2nd chick to have a miata gear box in her rx7

Well, like Karack says it doesnt matter too much if you run synthetic or not. In cases where you're synchros might be going in your tranny some Redline MT90 might help them shift smoother.

But you also have to worry on older parts that the Syns might leak through where regular oil didn't because it's much thinner.

Change your oil often and it doesn't matter what you use :P I change mine ever 1500-2000 and use Castoral GTX. NO problems yet..RP just costs too much.
