i would change ALL the fluids before you go as well as a good tune. also ALL filters should be changed. altough this may seem over kill i would never want to be stuck on the side of the road with my seven, it only confirms to other non rotors that the car sucks. dont let that happen please

you know on second thought just take all the money you were going to use on maintenance and repairs. and buy a 180sx. so you can drift and be able to make it the whole round trip. then sell it when you get back to some ricer for twice as much and then rebuild your 7 engine.

Well thats not a bad idea buying a 240sx
but the whole point i wanted to do this was to use my rx7
and once im back from the trip then i'll rebuild the engine or swap in a turbo engine
so does anyone know at how many miles i should replace the oil and spark plugs and wires?

thanks

I made that drive in '97 when my '90 was still a baby, only in the opposite direction of you (East to West). Aside from the obvious fluid change suggestions which are important, make sure you check the condition of all hoses and belts... this might just be a good time to replace your rad hoses as a preventive measure. Also check the condition of your fan clutch to make sure you have the best cooling possible.

Take a couple hour detour and see the Grand Canyon and/or Meteor Crater which is also really impressive:

And you might as well stay the night at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, TX and try to eat the "free" 72 ounce steak:

as far as oil i would change it around 2000-2500 miles (man do i HATE the dumb imperial system 5000km is so much easyer to remember) you may be able to go longer cause you will be doing all highway driving and if you dont drive like an a$$ it is easyer on the engine. i would change the plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, all fluids (dont forget the brakes, diff, and tranny!!!), and belts now before you start then only really worry about the engine oil while you are on your trip. i would also bring a full set of belts with you and a collection of fluids for your car, you dont need enough fluid to change it all, only enough to top up the car.

if you have leaks your car is not fit for the trip!!!

Yeah, replace every fluid in the car. Oil, coolant, tranny, diff, brakes, clutch for good measure, and don't forget to bring alot of blinker fluid. Make sure you have the cash for a rebuild after you're done. If you have a group of followers and one of them has a truck, it would be a horrible idea to bring a spare tranny, wheels with new tires, and some needed tools. I know that's a bit radical, but it would come in handy if you broke 5th gear. Must haves are replacement oil (make sure it's all the same oil), antifreeze/water 50/50 mix (advance auto parts sells premixed antifreeze), every belt maybe doubles, brake pads, commonly used tools (17mm, 14mm, 12mm, 10mm, 8mm, extension, ratchet, phillips and flat screwdrivers, big ******* hammer), a spare air filter, fuel filter, maybe a fuel pump, lots of pillows (for sleeping and but cushion), phone charger, cell phone, tow strap, don't forget to put your jack back in the car. I know, you think it's overkill, but look at it this way; You are about to put a full life's worth of miles on your car. My car only has 104,xxx miles on it and I have replaced more than I have listed. And yes, there were some jokes in there.

HAVE FUN!! I wish i could join you.

Thumbs up

defanitly spare parts, tires, rims, alternaters, waterpumps, apex seals. engine stand/hoist, call snap on and have them follow you, so you have tools to choose from. lol jk

if it was me.. id drift a lot.. in all honesty.. id prolly bring 2spare rim/tires because i would be drifting here and there.

everybody thinks that its impossible to drift a road you dont know? wow.. if you cant be in control of a car while drifting.. then your not drifting, your sliding. there is a difference.

Have fun, wish i could make that trip with you, it'd be fun. just be smart about it. check all the main fluids and belts at every gas stop.

whens the last time you replaced wheel berrings, i know people dont mention those.. but they can impact gas mileage.

Why not bring the whole autoshop with you?

All you need is AAA. Just bring oil, coolant, and gas.

excuse me sir.... i do practice what i preach, and no ive never hurt anybody or myself.. Ever take a corner 5mph above the posted speed on a road you've never been on? i bet most people have.. and i also bet most people havnt wrecked.. as long as you can see what your going around, you should be able to tell if its safe or not.

BTW you can drift a corner slower than a posted speed
