roll cage suggestions

roll cage suggestions

Ok you guys, i need some input. I need to get a full cage for the cym. Im keeping all the interior, so whatever i get must work with the stock interior. I want something pretty nice, dont really mind paying a bit extra. Id like to get something i can bolt in myself and do a nice job. If i have to i guess i can pay some guy to weld one one in. Thanks!

the black car has an autopower. Its not a full cage though. If it was, id be cannabalizing it by now

you want a four point or six point ? try contacting www.m2performance.com they have nice cages for third gens can probably get a custom cage for your car. you can also try and find a race car shop that does chassis work

i just bought a custom 6 point rollcage. installed the sparco rev seat last night. the cage is gonna be a wee bit of work as i'm going to re-sleeve all the places where the cage bolts together. that should be done before the weekend (taking a day off of work). this cage is temporary though. this coming winter i'm getting a custom welded cage. mitch piper in manassas, va makes beautiful stuff. i'm getting a full cage w/ nascar door bars, petty bar, etc... which'll run approx. $1800. trust me, this thing is a work of art. the bolt-in autopower stuff is nice, and i spoke w/ kirk racing about they're cages which are just as nice (same quality as autopower).

I think Kirk and Autopower are your only two options for bolt in cages. The guy that did mine, has all the templates and measurements for the cage, but he'd have to do the install, totally weld in, and there is 0 chance of getting an interior around it, it's way too tight to the body of the car to get interior stuff on it. His schedule is booked, but if you're interested, I can check with him to see if he's taking new work. He's based in Fremont.

not sure if Seth cares, but none of those cages appear to be SCCA lega (no diagonal support in the main hoop), and I don't see a fitment for RX-7 in there.

the bolt in stuff isn't drag legal. your best bet is to find a local place that will custom make stuff. I don't think it's that much. get it welded in and it'll fit the way your want. I really want to make a 6 point bar (not cage) for mine.

I had a 7pt roll bar in my FC with swing out door bar to make entry easier (no bar door on passenger side... 10.00 NHRA legal). It was $650 installed and it was a one off creation from a guy in Modesto. WOuld've been cheaper had I not of had the swingout (that was removable also with a pin).

Long drive.... but it was the best price I could find and the guy does great work. Cash only. BTW he had 3 cars in the shop getting either full tubs and/or full tube frame chassis work being done and another car getting a rollcage.

I still have his number and was very happy with the work.

first question would be what sanctioning body do you plan to race with or is this just for the street? if you plan to race the car then removing most of the interior would be in your best interest for safety and performance. usually a custom cage can be built around or through the stock dash. headliner and drivers door panel will go and alot of carpet and insulation need to be removed. the drag racing sanctioning bodies have slightly different rules than the road racing groups as far as cages are concerned so be sure to check the rules for the group you plan to race with. if it is for a street car I would not recommend a full cage. without a race seat, helmet, and harness you would expose yourself to serious injuries in a street accident. the FC has a tight drivers area and without lowering the seat and building the cage close to the body you would risk serious injury in a street accident. all of the bolt in cages I have seen do not give enough head room at all and make entering and exiting the car very difficult. spend the extra money on the custom welded cage. if it is a road race application the picture above shows a very good design. If you are in the LA,Ca area I can refer you to a couple people who can do the work. I also have a contact in Atascadero, Ca figure to spend about $1200 to $1400 for a good cage.

As far as i know, autopower is the only company (in america) that does bolt in roll "cages". Roll "bars" on the other hand are offered from a few companys... autopower, kirk, m2 (for third gens) and i cant think of any others right now... I went through chassis works for my roll cage... but it is weld in only. Bolt in cages are good for auto-x and spec rx7 racing... But for drag, i dont even think they count... but im sure some tracks would let you slide. So do you want a roll cage, or a roll bar? Some people use the term without thinking and only want a roll bar...

Personally I would not reccomend trying to do this cheaply. You will most likely end up replacing it in the future. For exampe I have an autopower, its a POS. You not only want your cage to provide protection but stiffness. Most likely a kit cage will not offer the tight fit required for stiffness, and the autopower provides little protection without modification. If you do get one of these cheap you can modify it to offer more stiffness and protection. not unless you can find it cheap would I reccomend that route. ALso if you're using this for wheel to wheel racing take a look at your floorboard, take a look at the dinky plates used for bolt ins. From, what ive heard the entire cage will shift and rip through the floorboard in a notable impact. Try and weld even a bolt in as best you can.
