Road trip on 1 rotor?

Well, my NA is blown (rear apex seal). It's in Eastern Tennessee while I'm currently in Ohio working at the RX-7 Store. I was wondering how crazy of an idea it is to drive the rx up here (about 400mi) where I have a proper place to work on it, and rebuild it here. I've heard a story about some guy driving to Rotary Revolution from South Carolona or somewhere and back, but I'd rather get some real info from someone who's actually done something like this.

Also, since it blew, I've put about 300mi on it and it seems to hold up well.

Well, I'd say if you've gotten 300 miles on it since it's blown then go for it. Chances are you aren't going to hurt anything more. If it's possible for you to disconnect the injectors on the rear rotor I would do it just so you keep from running a bunch of fuel through the motor and into the air. If you have two loose injectors plug them in to keep the electrics happy.

My buddy commuted on a 1 rotor for a while. This included about 3 road trips.

Rebuild it and then go on the road trip, better safe than sorry.. You'll spend more having the car towed than you will for a rebuild..

even if he broke down half way it shouldn't cost $1000+ to tow either back to where he started or to where he is going.

i noticed that a car with about 500 blown miles wasn't much worse than a car with about 5 blown miles...
but the 500 car was a real bitch to take apart (more than usual even).
Problem with those blown motors is that ya run rough as hell and lack power in 5th gear for hiway miles

The damage was done in the first few revolutions of the rotor and apex seal bits. Once all those chunks get removed, everything is pretty much going to stay the same until you tear it down.

Disconnect the injectors on the blown rotor & go for it, I say.

I drove well over 500 miles with a blown rear rotor. It will make it. It will use more gas than normal and you will slow down on some hills but on the straights I could still get 80 mph. It took forever to get to that speed and it will shake like crazy but it will hold. And you are right the motor is already toast so go for it.

I have always wondered about this. I see alot of FCs within 300 miles that have a blown rotor and have never purchased one because I didn't know if I could get it home without towing.

Good luck and keep us posted. Take some video if you have the chance once the engien starts going berserk on you.

When my engine blew it initally took out an apex seal, THEN the bearing spun, took out the stationary grears, rotor housings, all but 1 iron and both rotors as well.

I honestly blame this on Rotary performance SUCKING at rebuilds--there had been i think 20k miles on this rebuild, and after dissassembly, aside from where the major damage had been on both housings, i had noticed that they were probably brand new when the engine was rebuilt. I was able to drive my car on 1 rotor no problem for 5 minutes, once i got her started again and drove (or tried to) drive to work i heard another huge boom, i assume that's when i lost 4 teeth out of the stationary gear and completely screwed up my engine.

but that's just my story
Matt

I'm pretty confident in it even though its blown. Top speed has dropped significantly though... I've had it to 107 since blow-up.

And marlaman, that just sucks.

Pull the injector clips for the blown rotor, and pull the spark plugs out too, and be on your way.

I'd actually like to keep the rear hooked up considering one of the faces is still getting 60psi, and that helps.

When a rotor loses it's apex does the rotor slap the housing or scrape on it because it's not riding on that seal anymore, or will it have a bit of space between the walls as long as your bearings are in order and the gears aren't fucked up somehow?

Ok, well the proposed day is coming up, (wed). I'm starting to have my doubts. What are the chances of one of the front apex seals going out as well? Has anyone ever heard of this happening. Buying a Greyhound ticket is starting to look better.
