rims/tire measurements

Just want somebody to educate me on wheel sizes. What does the "6" mean in lets say 15x6, I know that 15 is the size of the rim but dont know what the "6" is for. Also when people say 30mm offset , is that the measurement of the lip of the rim?

So what size would be good on an fc so the wheels at the back dont look like they are inside the fenders, I mean I want the wheels to line up to the fender. Or will it be different for the front and the back because the back fender seems to be wider? Im planning on getting 17's. Thanks!!!

Do a web search on the subject, and you'll get tons of good info out there.

The subject has been thoroughly covered in a thread called "The Official FC3S Wheel Fitment Guide" thread in the Suspensions section.

un, wow.
Wheels are more than just a 2d circle. The 2nd dimension there is the width of the wheel.
ie. a 15x6 wheel has a 15" diameter and is 6" wide.

As TED said for offset amounts and tire fitments see the thread he mentions - I just couldn't help but comment about your lack of depth.

Your best bet for an authoritative description of wheel/tire nomenclature would be the Tech section of TireRack.com.

Basically, the 15 in your example is the diameter of the rim in inches, the 6 is the width of the rim where the tire mounts in inches. The offset is a bit hard for me to explain but it is a measure of the distance (usually in mm's) of the central mounting plate of the rim from the middle of the rim. So if you position the rim on its edge and look down on it, the mounting plate (the thing with the lug holes) with no offset would be exactly halfway between the back and front of the rim. offset is the amount that plate is offset, towards the front or back, from that mid point. For tire dimensions, see the TireRack.com explanation.
