Reverse and 5th gear detents
Looking for a little advice from someone who has had the detents out and reinstalled them. It started as no 5th or reverse. It would not allow the shifter to get over that far to get in to each gear. I removed the two detents tied to this issue. With them removed it shifts fine! As soon as I put them back in it won't shift to either 5th or reverse. I have an FSM it does talk anything about how it goes back together. I assumed the ridges went toward the check ball and spring from the back of the trans. I have tried a few ways. Still won't shift with it installed. Any ideas or help is appreciated. Thanks

I believe you're referring to the shifter return springs. The spring detents are for keeping the thing in gear once that gear is selected. The shifter return springs give the shifter pressure in the left/right directions to return it to center. If yours is giving you trouble, you may need take the extension housing off and inspect it to find out what's causing the hang up.
