RETed, other RX7 gurus!! HELP PLZ!!!

I'm FLIPPING OUT about my stupid fc3s. I went racing today... the car is so bloody slow. But i noticed an alarming trend... it doesnt accelerate to the redline fast enough. I mean ... no joke... in third gear, starting from about 2,500RPM, it takes it about 20 seconds to get to redline if i drop the gas pedal to the floor. I mean come on, that's just ridiculous. (yes yes, i didnt shift at 2500, i always shift at the redline when racing). Anyways, when it gets to about 5.5, 6000 rpm... the car shakes a little... but in a good way... it sort of accelerates me... I'm thinking my ports are fucked up. I already re-did the ground to my ECU. What could this possibly be? How could i possibly resolve it?!
DRIVING ME NUTS!!!
Thanks
-Ross

Ports are screwed up?&nbsp You're talking about an NA, right?&nbsp I really can't help you here...

If I would hazard a guess, I would say check:
1) cats are clogged?
2) 6-port operating normally?
3) car has a tune-up recently?

Chill out bud... If your car is not operating to it's potential (as you think) why would you even go race it ? Find out what the problem is, fix it. Then have fun before you break something..
Did you break the engine in properly after the rebuild? Checked compression lately?

I'm leaning towards Cats as well,,, (assuming you HAVE cats
as for the ports, you can smear some grease on the acuator arms, and then go for some "spirited" driving, come back and park and take a look, if the grease has been smeared up and down, you can see if the acuators are opening the ports...
whatever you do PLEASE don't WIRE the ports open... Worthless...
while your at it, check for ECU codes... See if it finds anything acting out of the ordinary...

assuming the engine has STOCK ports.....

Whats wrong with wiring the six-ports open ?? You dont want more power? The parastalic-loss taken buy the air-pump is a huge horsepower robber i would wire those ports open ASAP...

sounds like your car has serious issues, i suspect cat or muffler, something is clogging the flow somewhere

do you have any mods on the car?? do you have any cats on it? If you dont, then your actuators arent opening and youre losing power above 3800rpms. If your cats are still there, they may be clogged.

You need to learn a little more about how things actually work before you go shootin' your mouth off...
Wiring the auxiliary ports open yeilds absolutely no increase in power, because at high rpm they're open anyway! However you will lose power/torque at lower rpm due to reduced port velocity and poorer fuel atomisation.
As for the air pump, for starters we're talking about an 87, so the air pump is irrelevant to aux port operation. Secondly, what scientific methods did you use to figure out it was a "huge horsepower robber"? They actually draw very little power from the engine. Spin one by hand, you'll feel the resistance is minimal.

Interestingly enough, I can see my ports move in the driveway after lubing the rods a little (no jokes, please). I can see them open a little ways just revving them in the garage. I still lose tons of power over 4K rpm in my 88 conv. So, this could be telling me that my cats are clogging, right?!

see that's exactly it... i remember my car being alot faster than this. i mean, i've smoked a 97 accord ex. What does that tell me? That before the rebuild it was faster.

Could be your ports don't open fully, your injectors don't come online as they should, cats in your exhaust, timing isnt advancing right (?), you live on top of a mountain and there's no AIR, your air filter isn't flowing enough air, there's a chipmunk in your intake, the AFM is out of wack, the TPS is also wackless, spark plugs/wires are junk, bad coilpacks.....LOTS of stuff could cause you're go-porblems...

Also, what would explain the sudden jerking in the top end??? like almost as though the ports were becoming unclogged.

Thanks for the advice cory well, i've set the TPS... the timing has been sent right because the car is running ALOT smoother than it was last year, and no more backfiring. The cats is a plausible explanation, however, why would the cats be THAT MUCH more clogged than last year? Could it be possible that my trailing coils don't fire?? possibly that's why i'm losing so much top end
how do i check?

alright so here's the update... the ports were indeed quite hard to move... i have blisters all over my fingers because of it. I gave it a nice workout with some WD40. Should they go up and down easily??? they're still somewhat stiff... but much much better than I started with
