required distance between afm and throttle body?

hey,

i just got a cone filter and i am wondering whether i can get rid of the stock breather hose. is there some reason i cant just mount the afm directly to the throttle body as long as i find a way to hook up the bac air hose? like if i cut the stock breather pipe down to like 4" and then put the afm there?

thanks,
-Pat

You'll be putting your cone filter direcrtly above the exhaust manifold - the hottest area in the engine bay. You'll be wasting your time.

AFAIK, the length of that hose doesn't matter.

What he said.

The stock intake duct puts the filter in the best place in the engine bay to make into a cold-air box. Considering the relatively large size of the duct, they're be practically zero reduction in restriction if it was removed, just a whole lot more power-robbing heat.

UNLESS he was to put a short length of hose in so that the filter was sitting where the cruise control normally goes, built a box around it and put a NACA duct in the hood directly above it. I remember someone posting in here last year about wanting to do (or having done) something similar...

NACA ducts:

Now what you could do, is cut a hole in the hood, and put an air duct running out the hood like a snorkel. Put a 90 degree bend in it, and it will be a ram air filter
