Requesting info on '86 to '91 RX-7
Hello. I recently began looking for a vehicle that I'm going to use for a daily driver and eventally a drift car. I was told by a mechanic friend of mine that the '86 to '91 RX-7's were my best option, even over the AE86 Corolla that I was initially looking for (the AE86 Hatchback must be extinct because I can't find any for sale anywhere in the US, at least no online listings). He said there was a non-rotary version of the RX-7 during these production years and that was the car to get. Can someone please give me any further info on this and also let me know whether I should forget the mechanic's advice and go with a rotary or not. Also, forgive me for not knowing, but what is the difference between a rotary engine and regular piston engine. Also, what are the advantages of having a rotary versus a piston engine? I'm new to the car scene, so the more info I can get, the better. Thanks in advance to all who reply.
Also, if anyone knows of someone who's selling an '86 to '91 RX-7, and lives in or near California, I'd appreciate it if you could get me their contact info. I will only buy one that's driveable, in decent condition and has a manual transmission.

Your mechanic is wrong on all fronts.
First of all, there was not a "non-rotary" version of the RX7. Every RX7 that came out of Mazda's great factory had a rotary engine in it.
Second of all, you suck at searching for an AE86. They're easy to find, but ones that are in good condition are extremely rare.
Third of all, if you want a good drifting car, the RX7 is alright, but a 240SX is more practical unless you're willing to dump a ton of money into the car.
If you want to know what a rotary engine is, go to www.howstuffworks.com and search for it.
And third of all, this forum has the answers to every single one of those questions... SEARCH DAMN IT.
Edit: Upon further judgment and your lack of knowledge for cars, i would suggest you go read a book about drifting and watch some videos before you dare go out and buy a car to do something you've got no idea about.

yeah search and read alot, thier is a big diff. between piston and rotary, the 240 will oversteer easier but i like the fc better all around. thier is no factory rx-7 that didnt come with a rotary motor between those years. and you wont find an ae86 thats not 3k overpriced thanks to initial d. even the fc and and the s13 are getting more pricey. good luck with your choice. best thing i can tell you is drive an rx-7 and then drive a 240 and get the one you like better.
