Replacing turbo manifold gaskets. How hard is it?

Here's the problem. About four months ago I was driving home on a hot day on the freeway traveling uphill. The car was going a little bit into boost just to stay at the same speed. Now my car was getting pretty warm, but me being my stupid *** self again decided to keep on driving home since I wasn't too far away. Well a few days later my car starts making this really raspy sound from the turbo/manifold area. And now it barely builds up any boost, it just really sounds like crap. At first I thought it may have been a exhaust pipe leak that just happenend or something. After looking though I couldn't find any. Then one of my friends said it's probably a blown gasket on the turbo manifold. Just to be safe I'm going to replace both the block-to-manifold and manifold-to-turbo gasket. My question is how difficult is it to remove all of the turbo equipment to get to the gaskets? I heard it's a real pain in the ***. What things should I look out for?

Does it sound like I have a cracked manifold or dead turbo? I really hope I don't have either of those, I don't have the money to replace them.

Well I bought my series 4 as a body with a lot of boxes of engine stuff and put it back together as best I could.

When I first assembled it, I put one of the washers that go on a turbo -> manifold bolt between the two mating surfaces instead of under the nut by accident. That was rather loud (and scary) on starting.

Washer would be about 1/2 mm thick I reckon.

To pull off all the gear to rectify this error does not actually take much time, it's just a torturous experience! As long as you mentally prepare though it is OK.

Since then I have had on two occasions the nuts on the turbo to manifold bolts come loose over time, due to not using spring washers (I couldn't find any with the package so assumed there were none originally). Each time this caused a reasonably loud whistling, raspy noise, very audible. Each time I just tightened the nuts harder, but came undone again. Now all have spring washers, which to put on all 4 bolts is a mission and a half!

I would reckon that this would be similar to blowing an exhaust gasket. I noticed no effect on performance.

Can't remember whether you need to remove the intake manifold to get at the manifold to block gasket, I don't think you have to so is relatively easy too.

Hope this is of some use to you. Looks like you'll have to pull it all down regardless to find the culprit.

Good luck.

man its not as hard as he's making it sound. me and my friend replaced my entire turbo shortly after i bought my TII. but are you talking about the gasket between the turbo and manifold or between the turbo and the downpipe. if its the downpipe one, it should take you like 10 minutes. replacing my turbo only took us about 4 hours but we re-used the manifold. of course my airpump was already gone and ACV was already gone so we had a little more room.
its not that bad man. and if you do this yourself you will feel really good about it.
