Replacing neutral select spring
Im referring to the spring on the tail end of the transmission in the shifter lever area. If you take off the plate held by those 4, 10mm bolts, theres a spring in there which seems highly prone to snapping on the FC transmission.
My problem is that the spring coils around the shaft after the shifter housing thing which makes it seemingly impossible to remove. The FSM doesnt get much into it other then "take off the spring".
Any insight from anyone whos done this? Thanks.

My first FC had it snapped before I bought it, as did my current one. It was only when I blew my transmission about a month about, when I bought a replacement, that I discovered they did have those springs. I was wondering why FC's didn't have them, but the new transmission still had the original in it.
If someone knows how to replace them, I'd also like to know.

Yea I think I know what you are talking about--if it is the spring that goes around the shift rod and a metal block and is in the change control box (look at a FSM).
I'm in the middle of a engine/tranny swap of a TII into an FB. Anyway I had to remove the shift rod. There is a small dowel pin in the block inside the control box. It goes through the shift rod. Mine was a PITA to get out. You should be able to punch it through but mine wouldn't. I ended up drilling it out and will need to find some kind of replacement. Once you get that pin out you can pull out the shift rod and the block with spring will come out.
BTW you will need to remove the extension housing to do this (look at FSM). That part is not real hard.
Good luck,
Scott

I remember someone posting an answer to this about 6 months ago. They said that you have to remove the trans from the car to do it. Don't know for sure, but that's what the post said.

yea, you have to remove the tranny from the car, i did this last week. to get the pin out, you have to remove the N-5th spring, and put the shift lever in first gear, if you dont, the pin will punch its way into the side of the alumnium houseing its in. ask me how i know . you can get all the stuff you need from the dealer, includeing a new pin to replace the one you punched out. its a pain in the ***, but worth it. btw, theres 2 springs, chances are that if your one that returns the shifter from 5th gear and such isnt working you wont have to buy anything. the ball bearing probally just came off its perch, if the one from 1st to neutral dosnt work, you need a new spring.

I'd really think twice before doing this again. I already had the trans out and thought it would be a quick fix, what a massive pain in the rear. I beat on that pin for like an hour to drive it out.
The drawing in the FSM isn't very good, and even shows the shift select block backwards, and doesn't show how the spring goes on.
