think i could get the turbo unit out without having to drop the exhaust and downpipe? ive seens pics where the engine of a 7 (TII) has the exhaust still there, but the motor and turbo are gone. so that leads me to think yes. any ideas? my exhaust is about 150 lbs, one piece and took 3 people an hour and a half w/ a lift to put up, so i REALLY dont want to take the thing off, by myself with only a jack.

 

You should be able to without a problem, just unbolt the downpipe from the back along with all the lines and such going to the turbo, then unbolt the turbo/manifold and go at it.

 

cool deal. the wastegate is in dire need of porting so thats my soon to be project. really hate that the turbo to manifold gaskets are 50 bucks though!!!!

 

No there is no way to do that as the dp is directly connected to the turbocharger. You could however unbolt it at the dp level and leave your cat and cat back exhaust where it is. That would mean just the DP which only weighs about 30 pounds my guess. its not too tough. Just take the three bolts off that connect the dp to the turbo and the two bolts that hold the dp to the cat. thats it. Unfortunately its hard enough to get the turbo out alone much less with a dp attached to it. If you look you will notice there isnt much room. now if you were to pull the whole engine then yes you could just remove the three nuts holding the dp to the turbo and yank the whole engine out.

 

His exhaust is one piece, so removing just the downpipe wont be happening.

It can be done, you'll just have to push some things out of the way at times, or "force" the turbo out It also depends on how much you can actually move the downpipe away from the turbo, I guess, you may not be able to move it enough to get the turbo around it. Best way to know is to try, wont take long to figure out if it's possible or not.

 

When I removed my turbo to port the wastegate, I just unbolted the downpipe from the turbo and Unbolted the Manifold from the block, and pulled the whole Turbo/Manifold unit out...there was,however a lot of swearing

 

i know a variety of swear words for such occasions. but that means it can be done, which made my life MUCH easier. I wanted to check the condition of the water and oil lines anyhow.
