thanks for the reply...but how many are behind the ashtray and how many are behind the "center vents" (so i know i got them all before i pry), and you're referring to the center vents as the a/c vents in side the stereo surround?

pull out your vents there will be 2 screws going upward. Next pull off your piece around your shifter (the shift boot) Just pull up. Next, pull out your ashtray, 2 more screws....and thats that remember, be gentle!

If it's already cracked, don't worry about breaking it more. However, there are two screws behind the center vents, and two behind the ashtray. Everyone always forgets the top center vent screws, hence a lot of broken surrounds.

Yes, if I remember correctly auto tranny shift cover comes off after removing 4 screws on the sides. There may also be a wire to disconnect.

If you want to buy a new surround, head to your nearest Mazda dealer or Mazdatrix. About $50. There are also usually a few on eBay. I generally sell them for around $45.

And if you're in the market, pick up the series 5 surround. It's nicer looking i find, and since its rubberized, it seems much more durable.

If you get the S5 surround, you will also need the S5 center vents and shifter cover. Personally, I prefer the look of the S4 surround.

But when the S5 surround does crack it looks 1000% worse because of the way the rubber pushes up.
