Removing sound deadening-how too?

There has too be an easier way to get this stuff off. Right now im using a flathead screw driver a narrow putty knife and 50 grit sand paper! but it takes forever just to get a small area cleaned up and smooth! im working were my dash used too be.

i heard somewere that you could use heat? wouldnt that melt the ****? or maybe a blowdryer for hair...any sugestion's?

Dry ice, a hammer and chisel or heat gun/torch, chisel/scraper and maybe a hammer. Basically, one extreme temperature or the other.

The stuff is like tar, so when you warm it up its easier to scrap it off but it leaves a lot of residue, if you can get it cold enough to crack it comes up much cleaner. I was just trying different methods to remove this stuff an hour ago, I didnt have dry ice so I tried Ice, water, and lots of salt in a couple ziplock bags, it actually worked pretty well.

Think of it like stiff bubble gum. If you had bubble gum stuck to the ground and you wanted to get rid of it you could heat it up and it would be easier to get up but it would leave a lot of sticky garbage behind, where as if you cooled it off a lot it would chip off without leaving any residue (or very little residue behind

its not just ice

dry ice is frozen co2. wear gloves when you handle it.

it is by far the easiest way to get rid of sound deadening tar. you only need to put it in bags for vertical surfaces. put it in the bag and then tape the bag to the tar. for horizantal **** just put it directly on the tar.

wait a bit and then tap it with a hammer. it will shatter and you can just scoop it out.

Spray on a shitload of carb cleaner, let it sit, then scrape. Spotless.

So for anyone who has actually done this, does it make driving the car a lot louder than before? I have my car gutted right now, but im not sure if I want to go ahead and remove the sound deadening material because of how loud it might make the car.
