Removing seat belts

This is for anyone else who has removed their stock seat belts. I was just curious if I was doing something wrong or if its just me. I was replacing some trim plastics out of my car and needed to remove the belts. Nothing complicated here as its held in by a few screws and bolts. I go to reinstall them and the locking mechanism won't let them release. No matter how hard I pulled they would lock up. I didn't want to mess with it since it's for my own general safety. Figured I'd go and pick up a set from a wrecker. Worked fine at the yard, and yet when I went to install them these too froze. No amount of length allowed to strap a passenger in.

Did I do something wrong or is it just my luck with these stock belts?

They have to be held exactly upright to make them release.
Look at the metal ball in through the clear plastic.

Did you maybe switch left and right and now something is upside down?

That's not really possible.
Your inertial lock is engaged, that's why the belt is frozen.
I've not run into this problem, so I don't know how to free it.
