Removing exhaust studs; manifold-to-precat

for starters, i have an 86 gxl N/A

I'm trying to install a bonez race pipie/presilencer, and when i was removing my old exhaust, both of the nuts on my ehaust studs have seized, and damaged the threads pretty badly, so even if I CAN get the nuts off, I'll need to put in new studs if i want to tighten everything up with the new pipe on.

The thing is, i've heard that these studs might be impossible to get out, has anyone replaced theirs? I'm going to soak them in liquid wrench and try vice grips tomorrow, any information/ experience here would be great, and ASAP as usaual thanks in advance-

best stuff to use to get those bolts loose is PB spray, you can get it at Autozone, just spray some on the bolts then let sit for a second and then bam, it should work. Other wise, you'll just have to give it all you have to get them loose.

if i cant get them off, which i REALLY hope i'll be able to, what do you guys think about drilling out the holes, and using a tap to make new threads, then i could just use and size stud i wanted right?

You shouldn't need to go that far. With a length of stud to get a hold of it shouldn't be a problem. If they look like they're still not going to let go after generous amounts of PB Blaster, then apply some heat. Cheers

Snap-On and Craftsman make a stud extraction socket. Use this. It has a 3 cams in it and lock onto the stud and you can install or remove studs with it. Most mechanics know about them since they SHOULD have one in thier tool box. Ask them where to buy one. Use PB Blaster to soak the studs so it makes life easier. Mazdatrix sells the exhaust studs, call them for pricing....

Had the same problem that you have...but I took a different approach than you're probably going to. I knew the rest of the exhaust was coming in a few days so I just put on the full thing (except the stock manifold all is new). I'd recommend the same to you if you have the cash, plus it's worth it on the long run anyway. Good luck though, I used PB (loads of it) and nothing still budged, so I'm guessing you're gonna need to either tap and drill them or use heat (but I think PB is flamable so make sure you have the area perfectly clean ).

Good luck

As Breesej mentioned, Sears (as well as, Snapon, Mac, SK Tools, etc.) sells a stud removal tool which should make the job relatively easy. I've used this tool once before on my 90 GXL to remove a stripped stud on the exhaust manifold. Unless the stud is broken, this tool should work okay.

The Mazda dealer sells these studs. They cost only a couple bucks apiece.

You can get studs at any autoparts store. Just know the lengths of threads and the pitch. Probably cheaper than getting them from a mazda dealer or mazdatrix.

^^ the threads on the studs themselves? Remove all your studs using the tool mentioned above and replace them. On my T2 I replaced all my studs when I upgraded the turbo manifold.

You should see FD's man, they are soooooooo bad for breaking studs because of all the heat.
