Removing exhaust to install RB exhausts.

Hey guys,

I have just recently purchased a 1988 RX7 FC Convertible. I’ve been wanting to purchase the RB complete system, minus the presilencers cause I’d like to fabricate a straight pipe.

I have a general idea of how to remove everything, but a run down would be great. I noticed some sort of sensor on the manifold so I wanna make sure I can remove everything without screwing this up.

Can someone please help?!

That thing threaded into the manifold is the oxygen sensor. It transfers over to the RB system. Why not just get the complete system. It will save you time and will sound amazing. A straight pipe will be extremely loud and you're sure to get pulled over. As far as removal and install is concerned, its just that, remove the old exhaust and install the new one. I would buy new rubber hangers personally. Its a pretty straightforward job honestly.

Thanks for that! I guess a straight pipe would be pretty unnecessary. I just thought it’d be pretty cool considering where I live, it’s Legal to have a straight pipe for the year of car I have, and I have someone that can easily weld the pipes and flanges that I need.

It will get old quick, when all you can hear is the exhuast, the radio will not be loud enough, cell phone calls will be hard to hear
and your neighbors will hate you. There are some nice setups and there are some different things you can do to get some good tone. Here is my setup, Racing Beat Header, used a presilencer style muffler as a resonator and the same thing at the back as mufflers as well with some decent tips. Here are a couple of links to what my car sounds like and I am running some cheap mufflers. Trust me Straight pipe is really loud with any kind of after market muffler. I have straight piped one with factory mufflers and it wasnt to bad. but the tone was not to good.

I have the full RB road race exhaust on my NA FC. The presilencer is nice and doesn't draw attention to the car. The car sounds really good with it especially when you open up the throttle, and yes the car still backfires!

That will be a my next set up with a little twist. I am going to run a exhaust cut out so to speak. I have a racing beat header, then I am going to run a cut out that is straight piped on one side and a rx7.com cat. and a Racing Beat (Presilencer <--- maybe, it depends on how loud it is with just the cat. with matching apexi n1 style mufflers at the back. That way I can switch between obnoxiously loud backfiring shooting flames at the cruise in *** hole to neigborhood friendly.

Agreed don't get anything loud, it only makes you sound like an ahole. It is as simple as unbolt and bolt... except that your bolts might be rusted stuck. Get some liquid wrench and wrenches with long handles and/or a pipe to extend them. There are other more drastic techniques you can Google if needed, and/or rent power tools and/or ask a shop to loosen.

Actually, I have a similar setup on Project OldTree, and have run it on both a stock S4 13B N/A and the current 20B-REW. 95% of comments are usually at how QUIET it is, a testament to the thought and workmanship that Racing Beat puts into their products. Suffice to say that a 20B-REW lurking in a ho-hum S4NA with a tame RB catback is one hell of a sleeper
My setup is basically a straight pipe with a small 'echo chamber' in place of the cats, then fed through a RB TII catback.

13B (Bone stock S4NA, stock catback from 1986, one muffler blown off)

13B (Bone stock S4NA, RB catback)

20B-REW (Bone stock shortblock, factory Cosmo twins/shorty downpipe, then some flex pipe, the echo chamber and RB TII catback)

Me speaking in each video is regular everyday speech volume (~50 decibels). Swapping the RB catback on takes a couple hours

Straight pipe with custom manifold and exhaust + rb mufflers are quite silent on a turbo car. Atleast under 4k rpm
