Removing cats (i searched, didnt find my answer)

first off, its a 87 na se.

OK, a friend of my friend of mine is a welder and were going to make a replacement pipe for where my cats are, from the manifold to the y-pipe, a bolt up similar to the bonez race pipe. the problem is 5th and 6th ports. From what i read, what i make will have to be no more than 2 1/2'' to have enough pressure to open? i dont want it to loud, so as a resinator i just wanted to use a cherry bomb. so if i had 2 1/2'' in pipe with a cherry bomb, would my ports still open or would i be able to weld a nipple into the pipe (as shown in picture) for the air pump hose to go? I just want to make sure that my ports will open. Can someone give me a specific answer to this question? Thanks alot for any input.
